I think MakerWorld should require all user accounts to be linked to a valid credit card identity / bank account. Child sub-accounts could only be created by a valid parent account (without the bank/card ID).
All user profiles could have “default to family safe” then allow verified adult accounts to set their own opt-in filters to allow content based on category flags.
MakerWorld could require publishers self label their content, when they publish it. (mandatory)
Gun/Weapon related <yes/no>
Could be sexually suggestive <yes/no>
Could be politically controversial <yes/no>
Should be hidden from children <yes/no>
Only for no-filters people <yes/no>
… (moderators could add/remove from the list of flags) ….
The default would be to flag the “only for no-filters people”.
Then publishers could have the option to just hit “next” without reading if they wanted to.
(e.g. failsafe)
MakerWorld could also let users above a certain “level” suggest that flags be added to an image or a post.
An algorithm would then randomly offer a maker point to other leveled users if they would review 5 randomly chosen flag suggestions and give a rating. This process would be anonomized.
Flag suggestions could get reviewed by up to 5 others.
Users would have a hidden “trusted flag suggester” and a hidden “trusted flag reviewer” score that was automatically calculated by adding or removing a weight value. If you had a perfect suggester score, then maybe you only need one reviewer. If you have a perfect reviewer score, then maybe your votes can count as 2 reviewers in the future.
Both flag suggesters and reviewers would get a MakerPoint or two.
Maker points for funding the reviewers would come from temporary penalties on publishers maker point incomes if their work received suggested flags that the publisher didn’t self-identify.
Say 50% of a given Model’s Maker Points for the first 90 days following a reviewer upheld flag suggested.
These days, kids have credit cards and bank accounts. That would certainly have worked back then, but not in this day and age.
Incidentally, Bambu doesn’t check whether you’ve purchased a printer or what its serial number is. I wouldn’t really want it to, but Bambu doesn’t check whether someone creates one account or thousands.
While I think your idea is good in principle, there are two issues here. Firstly, kids are smart and often have credit cards. If they don’t have one, they’ll just borrow one. Secondly, Bambu lacks the necessary knowledge when it comes to web design security.
If they wanted to, they could have implemented spam protection by now to prevent people from creating hundreds of new accounts. This has nothing to do with NSFW, but if the system fails on that basis, I don’t want to go through age verification on such an insecure platform.
That’s as bad as when Ai Express (a Chinese company) asked users to verify their age through an Israeli company known for leaking data. Bambu will hardly be able to comply with the data protection requirements demanded by Europe or the U.S. - in the age verification field.
While in theory this might be good idea, the security risk of storing that data is a far greater concern for Makerworld. It would be a huge problem if that data was to ever leak and not worth the liability in my opinion.
Well they already let people save their credit card and ATM card information on MakerSupply.
They don’t have to do that, they could just redirect to ApplePay/GooglePay/PayPal and let it work the magic.
Also, you can “verify” your credit/card bank account by authorizing a payment of a random small amount (the amount is like a two digit proof of identity), then they immediately reverse the charge when done. Then they don’t have to store your data after they have proofed you can authorize a payment with an ATM or Credit card.
I have no idea why you keep dwelling on the credit card system. I’ve already mentioned this in my previous comment, but perhaps I wasn’t clear enough. So, I’m asking you this question now, clearly and directly:
What is the point of a age verification process by credit card - if teenagers can apply for a credit card in many countries? The same applies to bank accounts for teenagers.
Maybe you’re making the mistake of not thinking on a global scale right now. Different countries, different rules, different opportunities for teenagers.
There’s a reason why age verification by credit card has been phased out across the board.
However, I’d be happy to be enlightened on how to verify someone’s age by credit card - when today’s teenagers already have their own credit cards - I’m really curious to find out.
A little slice of life: I already had a bank account as a teenager because I was working - or rather, doing an payed apprenticeship - back then. That’s nothing unusual.
Yeah, you are right about the age thing.
I remember having a bank account when I was 11.
Heck, back then they didn’t even require ID, you could open an account as “Ronald McDonald”.
It would however create a hurdle to people opening multiple fake accounts to run up fake ratings and likes, and your example of getting a “print” count without actually having printed.
I would agree with what you said before about a stronger account verification being one that had a unique 1:1 relationship with a printer SN.
I had mentioned in a different post about how if Bambu embedded a security chip in the motherboard of the printer with a signing cert tied to the serial number, then models could be cryptographically signed, and a proof of print token could be issued by a printer.
Also, challenge/crypt-sig response could be generated by a Bambu printer too.
That can be done (like TPM / SecureBoot on PCs and the Secure Enclave on Apple products).
It doesn’t prohibit the system from being owned and controlled by the user, the chip just allows for hardware proof of possession.
Maybe people who want to post/print such stuff can be highlighted so the rest of us can avoid engaging? Who knows what else they are into besides plastic ■■■■ or salacious synthetic stuff?
I agree with you @Spoon
It is hard to tell. Although the Overton Window is about politics, the same concept applies.
It is difficult. But I think that we can all err on the side of caution. And we can have our opinions calibrated with feedback from the users and some random voters. It is easy enough for people that want to see that kind of thing to go into their account profile and choose to turn off filters.
I don’t consider myself particularly prudish, but when I first signed up for MakerWorld, I found about 5% of the content appearing on my home page downright offensive. I remember walking with my wife and some friends in Las Vegas and having pimp advertisers shove crap in my face, it was like that.
I started blocking the creators posting that kind of material. Whether the moderators became more proactive or it only took blocking a few dozen creators to train the recommendations, the problem largely disappeared for me.
Lunacy is expecting a refund and return of a printer because one repository is cracking down, while there are plenty out there that dont. You can’t be serious.
what? Luckily as of right now, your bambu printer can print from any stl you give it, from wherever you find it, with any filament you give it, nothing is actually hard-locking you in [yet]. The closest to hard-lock is the newer printers that only have profiles on bambustudio, but time will fix that.
And even in the future, if they screw with every knobs built into that machine that they can turn… so long as you retain your current firmware version and an SD card you will always be able to do whatever you want. So far no printers have crossed that hard line.
I agree with what you say about hard-locking you in (yet).
I think we should keep the public area where kids are clean and tidy.
But if we keep feeding the wanna-be prison guards, we might find they have built the gallows behind our backs. I currently have just a P1S, but I think my next printer will be a Prusa.
The road to ■■■■ is paved with good intentions.
I can agree that we need to take actions to protect children and also think that we can protect individual liberties. Do both. Don’t take the easy way.
Why we even debating it. Bambu owns maker world. They decide what is allowed and what is not. Regardless of how clear the rules are. You don’t like it or you find out your models don’t fit? Go elsewhere. There are plenty of repositories you can post to.
