Cruise Ship Print

Created 3 versions of my QM2 model - Original layout, 2016 refit and a guess at what the 2027 refit might look like.

Test print of deck 13 at 1:2000 scale in a few colours with 0.2mm nozzles - needs a bit of work.

Just a suggestion for you or anyone else printing ships, I know the owner of a large motor yacht (45 meters) who paid double digit thousands of SGD to have a 3d model of her yacht made in 1:56 scale. Go down the marina with a model and see what happens!

Kicked off a full colour 0.2mm test print of deck 13 of QM2 (4.5hrs) - see attached screenshots for the lower detail (for 1:2000 and 1:1000) and higher detail (for 1:500) version.

A little but suspect at 0.2mm - might try it double the size at 0.4mm to see whether it prints better at that scale. Looks ok by eye.

Should probably use white instead of black for the mast support - as tricky to remove some parts.

Couldn’t get a perfect side by side shot - due to port layouts and weather - but quite happy with convenience of tiny 0.2mm nozzle 3d printed models. Next time I might try getting a ferry for a better unobstructed comparison view. P&O Cruises Arvia 1:1 vs 1:2000

Decided to try selling one of my X1Cs - as getting too many printers.

Selling the newest one as it only has 1098 hours on it (the other one has over 2000, plus I had to change the fan on that one)

Haven’t used ebay for a few years - and not sure what X1Cs are really worth these days.

Initially trying to sell it without the AMS - as I would like to keep as many AMSs as possible.

Listing here in case anyone has any interest or feedback.

We looked everywhere!

Looks like this page is missing. If you still need help, visit our help pages.

No listing shown from the link , last time i looked x1c were going from £600-£800 in the uk

Listing got flagged - because I included a link to this thread and YouTube - so need to work out how to revise it. I’ve put it up for £450 (without AMS) - maybe I should push it up a bit.

Update - sorted out issue - plus pushed the price up to £500 - interesting to see what happens.

I just followed a search and found two in need of repair for that price (£450) , i would of suggested a search then determine which are listings to sell others, £1200 with ams for example would be a listing i would consider a listing to sell others , good luck with the sale

Interesting thanks - I looked at sold listings - and got the impression combo’s were going for about £600 - so thought £400 for one without the AMS - but maybe I will push the price up a little bit more as you suggest to see what happens - thanks.

Just posted this list on Facebook in response to a query about modelling a ship from deck plans - thought I would put in on here too - as easier to find

My process is

  1. Get dimensions - length, width and height. - and add them as parameters in fusion.
  2. Get a good side photo - from a distance zoomed in ideally - as straight as possible - to use for positioning of the decks and creating the side profile.
  3. Import it into fusion as a canvas - scale to 1:1000
  4. Draw the basic outline, and a horizontal line for each deck position
  5. Work out the deck heights from this - round them up or down - and try and make as many as possible the same height - and as them as parameters in fusion - and apply them back to the deck heights sketch.
  6. Create a component for each deck and a construction plane for each deck.
  7. Separate out the deck plans into one image per deck
  8. Load the decks in as canvases onto the deck construction planes.
  9. Line the decks up - with features like stairs - and adjust the dimensions - which sometimes involves stretching the photos externally - so that the features like lift shafts plus external widths match up - sometimes decks plans are not exactly to scale in both dimensions
  10. Then do an outline sketch for each deck
  11. Then create the hull using the lower deck profiles and lofts.
  12. Model all of the decks - only usually need to model one half
  13. Mirror each of the halves.
  14. Then start comparing the details with photos and videos - Blender is fairly good at this particularly for drone shots - because you can make an overlay of the drone shot plus real model to line them up exactly.

A few ship modelling examples here - gap added in ‘https’ - to stop the forum from rendering the URL to a direct link to a video - rather than the playlist.

I am new here and saw your great work on Cruise ship — Iona. How could I get this from you. Much appreciated.

Most of the ships are on Makerworld. For Iona there is a 1:500 multi part and a 1:1000 single colour. There is also a 1:1000 2 part buried in the Arvia listing.

Hi Dave,

Love what you’re doing! I’ve recently come back from a cruise on Arvia and felt that the model they provide on board was lacking a little in terms of true detail.

I downloaded some of your files from MakerWorld and printed one on my Elegoo Saturn 3 for a Christmas tree decorations, which came out great. I’d love to print a larger model of Arvia, but I can’t seem to find the files for the highly detailed Skywalk model from your own 1:250 print that you’ve posted.

Is there an updated Arvia file, including the more detailed Skywalk, that you’re able to upload to Printables?

Thanks again for all your hard work. It’s great to see these models being made available, and I’d love to have a more detailed Arvia to print.

All the best,
James

I never did release the 1:250 version - but just had an interesting idea.

Are you thinking of doing the whole ship at 1:250 - or just the skywalk part - As I could do another print of that part and release and maybe the rear promenade deck with all the little people on it.

Another interesting idea - At the time I printed it on 0.4mm and 0.6mm nozzles - So what I could maybe try is scaling the print files down to half size and printing it on 0.2mm and 0.4mm nozzles.

That way I would get an extremely highly detailed 1:500 print, plus also it would mean that it would just be a matter of doubling the size again if anyone wanted to print it at 1:250.

I will do a test print of the most detailed parts at 0.2mm to see how I get on.

It took weeks at the time to print it - but these days on an H2C it would probably be a fair bit quicker.

Thanks for getting back to me! I’m actually looking to print the whole ship at 1:1000 scale, rather than 1:250.

I’ll be printing it on my Elegoo Saturn 3 resin printer, which is capable of picking up much smaller and finer details than a standard FDM print. Because of that, I’d really love to make use of the more detailed Skywalk and rear promenade deck that you’ve modelled since your original files.

Even though I’m printing it at 1:1000, the extra detail would hopefully make those areas stand out much more than the standard model. If you’re able to release those updated parts, I’d definitely be interested in giving them a go and seeing how they come out on resin.

The idea of scaling the detailed version down and testing it at 1:500 sounds really interesting too. If that works, I imagine the 1:1000 version could retain a surprising amount of detail on resin.

Thanks again for considering it

Hi guys! I meet my wife when we both worked on Majesty of the seas (RCC) now after 10 years, I want to print a 1.1250 but I can find the documents nowhere. Maybe someone could help? super thank you. PS: i have the X2d

That’s going to be hard to find. Making one of these models is a 100+ hour endeavor.

I’d like to do the RCCL ships one day - I did ask them if they would let me share my Celebrity Apex model - but I didn’t get a response. Might try again one day - especially if I ever get to go on an Oasis class - plus I would like to try one of their smaller ships like the Majesty at some point. Linersworld have got a lot of ships available - although I think they are mostly designed for Resin printers.

Ok - Resin, interesting - not sure how that would work with all that detail - as its designed to print printed unsupported from below - rather than above.

I’d like to get one of those new Heygears UV 3d printers - I think that would be more suitable.

The 1:250 version was designed to be printed in parts - rather than all in one piece - but a lot of it is the same as the 1:500 model - which just the promenade and top decks having a bit more detail. I suppose I could try it out single colour 0.2mm at whatever scale fits on an H2C plate to see if it works and release it if it prints ok.
