Back to cruise ship modelling - now working on P&O Arcadia. Decided to have a go at using Blender rather than Fusion 360 for this one. Quite a steep learning curve - but starting to make progress. Basic fairly blocky outline done.
Managed to get Hull design done in Blender - but finding it quite hard. Need to work out an easy way to split out the separate colours into different STLs.
Best bits were being able to use angled photos with lots of perspective.
Worst bits are getting rid of non manifold errors.
Not sure whether to continue with it or to switch back to Fusion.
Update - managed to work out a way to separate out the colours into different objects - using P / Split by Material in Edit mode,
Then thicken up the parts using solidify 0.3
Then export each object separately - which needs some automation,
Then import into Bambu Studio. Ship currently hollow - but can probably fix that.
Think I am going to give up on Blender for the full modelling process after several weeks of learning and modelling.
Best parts of Blender for me are:
- Perspective plotting from photos
- Fast startup time
- Good for offline use
- Begin able to manipulate triangles fairly easy to make complex shapes.
Worst parts are
- Complicated shortcuts
- Multiple keystrokes to do lots of things
- Lack of accuracy
- Non Manifold errors that are very tricky to fix - mostly relating to splitting model into multiple objects for colour import into BS,
- Much harder than fusion to do most things and results not as smooth
Did a reasonably successful multi colour print from Blender version of Hull - but in fixing a few minor issues spent hours sorting out non manifold errors again.
So decided to import Blender version into fusion as an OBJ file and then trace it and recreate it in Fusion. Only took a couple of hours and already much happier with the model and it is ready to print again.
So think I will stick with Blender as part of the process.
But only for perspective photo tracing into the rough shape, which I will then import into Fusion 360 for proper modelling.
Will also use Blender for animated renders.

Arcadia now ready for first 1:1000 single colour test print.
Had to add in quite a lot of manual supports - most of which can be left on - but need to snip some parts probably.
Fairly successful first single colour test print. A few more supports needed, plus some beefing up.
Also working on multi colour optimisation.
Print time of full ship 16h52m. 457 changes
If I separate out the Funnel and Black side lifts into separate parts it reduces to 10h57 (-5h55m) 247 changes (-210) for the rest - So will probably do first multi colour print this way,
Also thinking about the 1:500 scale version. This ship is just small enough to fit onto 2 build plates only at that scale which is handy.

Arcadia 1:1000 now finished - flawless 3 x AMS print - without a single intervention required.
Should probably print Azura at this scale too to complete the set.
Only 2 P&O Cruise ships to go - Britannia and Aurora.
1:500 scale version of Arcadia next - Central springy T joint split fits quite nicely behind the central scenic lift shaft. Will print the ship largely in 2 parts, with just Funnel, lifts, top cap and sports courts separate.

Main changes were smaller text, plus reworked the sports courts to make them look a bit more realistic.
Managed to fit ship onto 2 main plates, with a few extras for little parts.
Rather than my old multi part Fusion 360 method of having to have all of the bodies named appropriately to differentiate which part they are part of - for this design decided to take a short cut using F360 appearances - by setting up 2 copies of each colour - one for part1 and one for part2 - was able to fairly quickly recolour the model and then use this to select out the appropriate parts for printing.
New more details 1:500 sports courts pictured next to 1:1000 print - to show the difference in scale.
Major plates for 1:500 model - will probably print this one without any flush-into blocks - are worst purge ratio only about 30%.
Was quite tricky to position the bow to fit exactly on an X1C build plate.
Its nice to be back to cruise ship printing - a bit messy I know, need to sort out a waste bin in new mobile 3d printer location - but Azura 4 colour 1:1000, Arcadia 9 colour 1:500 rear section now well underway - Azura has about 15hrs left, and that Arcadia section about 9hrs.
Had initial failure with Azura print due to bed levelling not working due to filament purge stuck on nozzle.
Also had a few LAN problems which resulted in some reboots - which is fairly common - probably the only real issue I had.

Azura 1:1000 4 colour print completed - did have a couple of spaghetti warnings. The 5 ships at that size look pretty good.
Arcadia 1:500 now finished - a lot quicker way of printing than for other 1:500 models. A few minor faults - that just require a bit of extra support added, plus scope for adding more detail at some point.
Really motoring on Cunard Queen Victoria design - which up to Deck 8 is more or less the same as Arcadia - apart from the middle section, plus a stretching of the hull by about 11m
Cunard Queen Victoria model now almost done - just need to check details and add a few supports into the model.
I think I prefer the look of QV to Arcadia - due to the colour scheme and slightly longer hull.
Queen Victoria print now ready to go. Doing a 13hr multi colour 1:1000 scale print first - not bothering with flush objects - as am happy to melt the flush swirls into flat sheets.

Also interestingly managed to fit the whole of the 1:500 model onto one build plate - which halves purge waste - and is a big contrast to the around 20 build plates on my published 1:500 ships. Only extra plates required with be for a couple of small capping sections and some joiners.
Looks like the print will take about 33hrs - so will kick that off later next week - after likely reprint attempts on the 1:1000 version.
but does it actually float?
@jonesq The models are not very heavy, particularly the ones that are printed as one or only a small number of parts, so with a suitable weighted underwater hull added then I am sure they will float. I am planning at some point to join a local model RC boat sailing club and adapt some of the models for RC sailing.
Almost perfect print - had to use black rather than dark blue (as BL are out of stock) - and almost ran out of the black. A few droops that I had to cut off - so probably need to add a little bit more support before printing the double size 33hr version.
No interventions required - plus my first real use of Flush-to-infill seems to have worked ok.
