Custom vs Bambu for other filament vendors - cons?

Hi,

Since BL issues with the tape on their spools, I chose another vendor for filament and I am satisfied with their products, but AMS and Bambu Studio have huge issues with custom filaments, constantly forgetting which filament is in which slot, specially when the printer has internet blocked.
So I tried just selecting Bambu as vendor and then selecting the type of filament I have, for example ABS and the right color. Now, both the AMS and Bambu Studio seems to remember the filament and AMS slot just fine even after reboot/shutdown.
I have my custom filament settings defined and used when slicing.

The question is: are there any cons with using custom filament settings from other vendor while keeping Bambu filament defined on the AMS?

Thank you.

Studio and custom filaments struggling is a feature not a flaw
But jokes aside I know what you mean, been in the same boat.
Certain things have to happen so custom filaments work fine.

  1. Define them correctly and calibrate them correctly.
Many vendors already provide profiles for Bambu and if not then at least recommended settings including flow ratio and PA values.
  2. Use the system correctly!
The AMS deals with the filament, Studio syncs from there - not the other way around !
  3. Use a matching firmware and Studio version.
  4. Do a clean install from scratch…

I struggled for a long time getting my custom filaments to work as advertised.
Turns out just updating Studio all the time either means you loose the lot or that things fail to work.
There is also the grandfather problem.
All filaments link back to the default profiles.
So once there is a major Studio update or some of these defaults change it makes a total mess out of your custom filaments.
Copy and past won’t work thanks to how Bambu deals with security and integrity of files.
Only relying on screen shots for the settings or exporting it all and hoping the import works.

With a clean install of Studio and setting up my filaments from scratch everything, in LAN only mode works as advertised.
The filaments stick, the settings stick, my prints work fine.
Extra bonus for me is that I can now assign filament without a colour and change rolls basically on the fly for multi colour prints as now unused slots can be messed with while printing.
Quality wise I would say my vendor is more reliable, much cheaper and unlike Bambu won’t run out of stock constantly…
