CyberBrick Crawler

Now that my second CyberBrick model is finished and uploaded.

I would like to present it here in the community. It is a spring-loaded tracked vehicle for off-road use.
The two tracks are connected to the chassis via swing arms and have individual suspension.
Each track is powered by a motor. All parts except for the Cyberbrick components can be printed. The tracks are made of TPU.
My model page also features two videos of the vehicle in off-road use :wink:

They are a way to reward models/creators you like on Makerworld. Users who print models directly from MW during the week will receive 2/3 boosts the following Monday that they can give to creators. Originally they were worth roughly $1 each but I’m not sure if that’s still the case.

Thanks, my daughters helped me build one of these today. It works well, but I do have a few questions/comments:

  1. Power is pretty low and it seems to struggle on carpet, especially in a full turn (so forward and hard left or right, where one tread is moving and one is fixed). We did lube all gears and axles.
  2. The suspension pins aren’t a tight fit and have fallen out in use. Are they meant to be a friction fit?
  3. I had to reprint the axle/motor mount parts (left and right). I used the included print profile with Matte PLA for the first attempt, and the axles were too brittle and just broke off. I re-printed in PETG with more wall loops and higher infill and it’s a lot stronger.

On the motor power thing – I may look for a larger (longer) motor with the same mount that could be fit into CyberBrick models. I think motor power is a major limitation and it’s unfortunate that they don’t have larger options on the store. The motor driver board says it can handle 1500ma total and these motors are 150ma, so there is a lot of headroom.

My kids still enjoy the model a lot and I really respect you sharing your design!

Hello, first of all, thank you for the feedback.

Re 1): Yes, unfortunately the motors are a little weak, which is why I have already installed the reduction gear, which increases the power on the chains but also reduces the speed of the vehicle. I haven’t found a suitable solution with more powerful motors yet, but I’m still looking.

Re 2) The pins should normally have some friction when inserted, but of course this always depends on the print. If I further restrict the tolerance, the pins may be too difficult to assemble. As a workaround, you could put a drop of glue on the outer edge of the bolt.

Re 3) The fact that the axles broke off with PLA indicates that the layer adhesion was not optimal during printing. => Improvement: Increase the temperature slightly or reduce the printing speed slightly.
But in general, PETG printing is better for stressed parts (I also mainly use PETG-HF).

OK, I hope I was able to answer your questions. If I find a better solution for the drive train, I will let you know.
