Device refuses to see wifi after years of working perfectly

I have an X1 Carbon that I’ve been using for a couple of years now. For that entire time, it has been connected through a particular wifi access point. (An Amplifi (https://amplifi.com) ) Nearly everything portable in the house runs through that SSID. This access point is approximately 15 feet from the printer through two internal walls.

This morning, the device was disconnected from wifi. The wifi SSID does not appear in the list of available SSIDs, but I can see at least eight other SSIDs. (From neighbors, all at least 100 ft away.) The access point is up, and I can successfully connect from multiple devices. (Two linux machines, an iPhone, two MacBooks, a PlayStation Portal and a Steam Deck are all still functioning with this access point through this SSID.)

Manually entering the SSID does not work. Connecting to an iPhone hotspot, or a different wifi access point both work fine. I’ve set up an old wifi AP just for the printer (in my garage, about fifteen feet from the printer through a wall) and it has no issues.

I’ve rebooted the printer multiple times, turned wifi on/off, rescanned repeatedly, and no matter what, the printer seems to see every SSID in the neighborhood except the one I want it to use.

Neither the printer nor the wifi access point have had a software update in quite some time. Printer firmware is 1.11.02.00, which was likely installed last December.

What could cause the printer to suddenly stop seeing one SSID, and only that SSID? Are there other ways to diagnose this?

Double check the 2.4ghz radio remains on for that AP & SSID, I don’t use amplifi hardware, but all my networking equipment is unifi, and sometimes I think there must be firmware fairies messing with my settings. Also, are you using the mesh antennas with this?

I decided to run mine on LAN. Donno if that’d work for you, but I like it.

LAN mode doesn’t help much if the printer won’t connect to the network.

I tried telling the AP to use different SSIDs for 2.4ghz and for 2.4ghz IoT, and sadly the printer sees neither.

There is a mesh network access point way at the other end of the house.

Could the WiFi AP have blocked the printer for some reason? There’s typically a way to forbid access by MAC address, for example (not familiar with Amplifi specifically). No idea why that might happen w/out your knowledge, of course… :person_shrugging:

Not as far as I can tell. I certainly wouldn’t have set that up on purpose.

Actually, as far as I can tell, there’s no blocking available as it’s in bridge mode.

I did notice that the mesh AP at the other end of the house was dead for some reason, so I’m doing a factory reset on everything. Weird that just the printer stopped working and nothing else. (Though my son was complaining about lag spikes in his gaming, which the dead mesh AP would explain.)

Use your cellphone to create a hotspot and use a different SSID, see if the printer connects to your phone.

Yeah, I tried that initially. It connects to both my phone, and a different wifi router I had laying around.

Sounds more like an Amplifi issue than a printer issue.

That’s where I’m leaning, but I still don’t understand why every other device in my house sees it just fine.

Not on my printer but on other devices I fairly frequently have devices(random) showing some kind of connection issue. This is usually resolved by rolling the “router” or whatever device is supplying the wi-fi to everything. This has pretty much been the norm for every router/modem I have owned xfinity(Arriss)/cisco/asus/etc. It does seem to get worse as the devices age.

Looks like my access point just up and decided it didn’t want to do 2.4g anymore. Massively frustrating, but nothing to do with the printer.

Thanks for the update …….
