Disable auto home center at start

Is there a way to disable the extruder tapping the center of the plate 6 times before the start of each print? Can it be turned off, or even moved at all?

it’s setting z, why would you not want that?

Sure, you can edit the start gcode.

I am printing a body, doing a color swap, and printing more, building on top of that. This movement hits the first body, and thinks the body is the plate., which turns the 2nd print into a mess b/c it is printing on air basically. The 1st body is so large I can’t move it around on the plate to create an opening at the center point. I wasn’t sure if there was a way to just move where this motion hits? I understand it needs to “find” the plate right? How would I go about doing this if possible?

The solution is to print the entire model in a single print. You can tell bambuStudio to switch colors at the desired layers. With AMS, it will automatically change and continue printing. Without AMS it will pause and ask you to exchange the color.
I don’t have BambuStudio at hand right now, so I can’t tell you exactly how you setup the change.

AMS isn’t an option because I am using TPU. Pausing isn’t ideal with what I am printing either, because it is TPU.

I have not yet had a chance to try this but maybe @Lexi may be able to help you?

You may want to ask her nicely by DM.

Then I think, I haven’t fully grasped what you try to do.
I understood, that you want to print the lower part in one color. then you want to print a second model on top in a second color and so on. Is that right?

More or less, yes. And the lower part is sitting dead center. And I can’t move the body because of the size. So I want to move that movement off to the side if possible. I understand it has to tap and “find” the plate, but why does this have to be done in the center?

But why can’t you switch the filament midprint when the printer pauses for that purpose?

Since it is TPU, and what I am making, the pause kind of ruins the print. That is an option and I have done it before, but the easier solution would be to move the center probe. Just seems like something you should be able to do. Do all printers tap the center?

I think, the tap is in the middle, because that is the shortest distance to any other point on the buildplate, which reduces maximum deviations when the build plate isn’t perfectly level.

Jon has already pointed you to the gcode that contains the tap:

One more question: When the printer finishes the first print, then you change the filament and then you start the print of the second color, isn’t the pause much longer?

Maybe yet another solution could be the Sunlu filament joiner. That would allow you to print continuously. You probably have to do some experience to figure out the exact length where the color should change.

I know its annoying but its part of what makes the Bambu labs printers print like a dream.

Filament joiner doesn’t work in this case. I don’t use the pause bc the print gets ruined. If I can’t clear the center point, I just scrap the design.
