Personally, I highly discourage the use of AI in any form. Learning to prompt AI is not the methodology of 3D printing. It was invented and brought to us to take our imaginations, thoughts, and concepts to the real world with already very minimal effort, compared to previous methods of using lathes, injection molds, and various other forms of manufacturing. By using a automated STL generator, you would be allowing a computer to take control of what physically exists in this world, that will never be exactly how you imagined. This just defeats the purpose of 3D printing, which is to make things custom to you.
And all previously stated aspects above don’t even consider the other physical problems. AI is sucking up enormous amounts of energy. A single data center of AI servers would probably use more energy you will ever use in your entire life in a hour. The resources to run AI is also causing heavy strain on us. An example of this is my PC I built that I use to do everything. I originally got 2x8GB of DDR4 RAM for $40. Last time I checked it is $160 and rising. So unless you want to never own a computer again and rely on these huge corporations to serve you a computer billed by the month for life, please don’t use AI. You are a valuable human, a value AI will never replace, with the capability to do so much more as long as you work for it. And eventually, any struggles will pay off, and in maybe in a form you won’t notice.
On the AI using resources point, Crucial has stopped selling DRAM and SSD drives to the public. Their entire output now goes to AI.
Data centers of all types are electricity and water hogs. Some of the numbers are mind boggling. 25% of the state of Virginia’s electricity is going to data centers now. The huge suck is causing stress on the grid, driving up rates customers pay, and is making the grid less reliable. I don’t find good rate numbers for VA other than current rates but AI data centers drive up costs for everyone wherever they site a new center.
It takes years to build out new grid capacity. Home solar and other green projects had been supplying much of the growth in grid capacity. All these data centers appeared almost overnight and the energy to run them is mostly coming from burning fossil fuels. The BBC reports US coal consumption was up 13% last year mostly for AI energy demands. That’s a huge amount of CO2 the world can’t afford.
Where I live December was the hottest on record with over three weeks of record setting temperatures. We were up over 20F from normals and had us setting high highs records as well as high low temperature records. And the records we kept breaking were mostly all recent records. It’s getting hard to ignore how hot the planet is now. And that 1.5C red line we weren’t supposed to hit until 2050? We’re hitting it now over 20 years early.
I never used AI much but have used it some. But I’m doing what I can to not use it at all. It’s horribly wasteful and carries a huge price many aren’t even aware of - unless they’ve gotten electric bills that go up $11-13 month after month after month - Dominion Energy’s increasing rate schedule for 2026-2027.
Like everything else it’s a choice but our choices so far are killing us. We need to do better because the tech bros cashing the checks sure aren’t. They just stuff their apocalypse hideaways with even more freeze dried food.

I swear my heart is in it’s right place. Not THE right place but somewhere dark and comfortable.
AI is killing humanity in the resources it takes to run it. And these massive corporations are not solving the problem, they just throw more food at the spoiled beast instead of training it. I personally feel that our winter where I live have been extremely abnormal. We have had multiple days where it is in the high 50s, and very little snow. I remember I was hoping to buy some RAM to upgrade my PC to 2x32GB DDR4, and later get another kit of that to have 128GB (I do some stupid stuff on my PC, that’s why). That would 2 years ago cost around $200. Now, I’m looking to spend more than what I spent to build the entire thing. And I also wanted to get more M.2 NVMEs, but the price is going bananas on that too. My 1TB Kingston SSD costed $60 when I built it, now it is $140. And I don’t want to buy any PC parts from these huge businesses who are practically scamming the consumers of all of these AI servers (at least a 40% markup) and have huge monopoly over everything. And also how they mark up HDD prices just because they can. Anything I have bought recently comes second-hand, from a thrift store.
Speaking of which, I don’t think the PC market is supposed to be like crypto. I bought a Dell Compellent sc8000 server for $20 at said thrift store, and it had 64GB of DDR3 RAM. That now, even though it is DDR3, is worth many times more than it was. I never was trying to invest in real-world physical crypto, I was simply buying PC parts, like someone would buy picture frames. All these huge businesses want to do is to make you pay for one of their PCs in the cloud that they have full control of, and charge you way too much for a AI-bloated platform they can take away from you at any time, and you can’t use it without the internet. This is why open-sourcing anything, is so important. Consumers need to own their products like we used to.
It is just absolutely crazy to me the energy AI is taking. I remember (as a bit of a roller coaster nerd) a LIM (linear induction motor) launch on this one coaster took enough MEGAWATTS to make the people connected on the same power grid complain of the quality of their power from the voltage sag. And these data centers are drawing GIGAWATTS. That should be enough to effect 1000x the amount of people compared to the roller coaster launch. We are at the point where lightning strikes would probably struggle to power these data centers. It is insane.
I’m not a fan of AI either, but let’s bring some facts and knowledge into the discussion. Yes, it is used by many large corporations - there’s no need to argue about that. However, it is also used in medicine for cancer research, which is one of the greatest achievements of mankind in recent years.
No human being could carry out a preliminary examination with such perfection. AI also serves a purpose in weather and disaster research. As well as in science. Completely demonising it doesn’t help either.
When people talk about AI, they often think of ChatGPT or creepy images. However, AI definitely has its place, particularly in medicine.
This must be considered both globally and at a country level. Currently, the United States is the frontrunner in a negative sense because it is completely unregulated. In Europe, for example, stricter regulations apply with regard to usage and energy efficiency. So it is primarily a problem in the United States, with China in second place. So there needs to be more opposition from politicians, the government, and citizens, otherwise nothing will change.
So, while it is partly an AI problem, it is primarily a political and country-specific issue. Of course, global structures also affect other countries, such as the price of hardware.
Nevertheless, we should not simply repeat what some AI opponents are claiming - of course, just as little as people who praise it to the skies. There is also great potential for AI to save energy in the long term. The technology is improving and processes are being optimized. Regardless of whether someone likes AI or not. This has been scientifically proven and is not science fiction.
The problem I see is that nowadays everything can be falsely labeled as AI, thus lumping together meaningful applications such as medicine with funny pictures. Sticking to the facts: AI consumes one percent of the electricity generated worldwide. This includes both useful and useless applications. We’re talking about 1%. Believe me, if humanity wipes itself out, it won’t be because of 1%.

Not necessary to print it already, but I use Meshy, which helps create the base model for you to work on top of it; it already gives you 60-90% of the final product. You just need to polish things in the end, but only if you pay for it, of course… I would recommend using it for a month and see the results, if you know a little bit of Blender, it will make a big difference.
Another one that I started testing is tripo3d, maybe even more incredible than Meshy. pay for a month, and you can see for yourself if it is worth it.
Funny how everyone hating on A I skipped right over the fact that it’s already integrated into Bambu’s core framework.

Commodity parts being used to power data centers are causing supply and demand issues, it’s real. Anyone remember GPUs and crypto mining? Here’s the current version of that.
Power grid issues? A drop in the hat compared to new subdivisions popping up and creating traffic and infrastructure issues, higher elevation new construction requirements pushing all the drainage to the older construction sitting at lower elevation causing flooding that was previously non existent. Maybe if they had used A I for predicting these situations by calculating all the variables they would have thought twice.
The A I output is only as good as the input, garbage in garbage out.
I was at a recent conference and here’s a quote by a big PC manufacturer embedding copilot chips for local processing on their motherboards.”A I won’t replace humans, humans using A I will replace humans”.
Ponder that for a moment.
Now back to the original question, hybrid approach. Use any A I to turn your thoughts into an image, do it over and over until it matches your vision. Then use an image to 3d model “tool” because well that’s what A I is meant to be another tool, to generate your model. Lastly, you will need to learn manual editing somewhere because the output is not always print ready. You still need to understand mesh’s, make adjustments and repairs. A lot of the A I generated models are garbage and don’t print or scale well due to the lack of detail in some areas of the prints, this usually shows up on the undersides / overhangs.
There isn’t a quality A I generation printable output “yet”. However the MakeU tool is getting pretty close and so is Meshy. There’s where we are in early 2026 to answer your question.

I’m modeling with blender and Fusion 360, and still AI may be fun. It’s not “better” or “easier”. I’t different process for different results.
I’ve seen pretty good results with Tripo3D and Meshy.ai, give it a try.
Right. Did architects all go out of business using rulers, pencils and t-squares or did they adapt to Autocad?
I’m not here to argue but I guess I should explain my viewpoint. Such basic tools mentioned were created fully by humans, or a group of them. CAD programs were developed by them. AI, however is developed by itself. We just throw text, images, videos, or whatever at it, and “train” it by rewarding it for the correct (ish) outputs. To me, that is showing minimal effort from the people who are developing it, and low effort often results in low quality, for profit companies. And that sounds awfully familiar.
Now yes, I didn’t mention that not all forms of AI are strictly bad. Some scenarios, like AI print failure detection or subtitle generation are not bad as they don’t really have any other way to be efficiently done with raw scripting. It is just the point where when I see these huge LLMs that require more computation than a well-scripted program could do the same thing for that I start to become concerned about the lack of effort such huge businesses should be able to easily provide.
And AI can still be a fun tool to mess around with if you are running it locally. It kind of prohibits you from using massive models and sticking to well-developed AI models optimized for efficiency. At this point, running it locally becomes more of a challenge and a form of entertainment of sorts.

I agree. And I upgraded before the RAM spike after the Blackwell GPU’s dropped and have two local instances. My point which predates A I, still remains. Garbage in, garbage out. SQL databases, spreadsheets, polls, surveys, skewed facts will wrong datasets and misinformation or lack of proper input. It’s not new, just new output or the referenced AI SLOP
I use Meshyai, but in my opinion, it always gets what I want wrong. If you want to actually design stuff, Tinkercad is pretty beginner-friendly
