Do not use Tree Support! Please Fix

Not sure if Bambu is aware but SUPPORTS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE REMOVED!!! Just got done with a 12 hour print only to find out that the Tree “Supports” are not supports they are part of the sculpture fused and impossible to remove without damaging the main piece.

Out of all the printers I’ve used Bambu has the easiest supports to remove, with the caveat being the worst looking overhangs. Never had a problem removing tree or normal supports with the default Bambu settings.

And how is the slicer or printer supposed to magically make some layers of the print stick together and other layers fall apart?

You set a big gap between support and supported and low density supports to get ugly supported surfaces and depending on material and temperatures and cooling and speed the supports might break away easily or you set smaller gap and higher density to get better looking supported surface and more difficulty removing supports.

Or most sensibly you use support interface material which provides support without sticking.

So I think I figured out the problem. When using tree support the slicer asks if you want to adjust the z gap and interface as soon as you go into tree support. I replied yes. But I went with the Hybrid Tree support. In doing so it left 0 z gap and zero interface layers. Also when looking at wiki it states those auto settings are to be used with support material only. So I added some gap and we will see how the reprint goes.

Well still not good. Conclusion is that tree support needs work in this slicer. They are the best choice on Cura because they actually come off of the print without the need of a special support material. They also do not destroy the surface of the print.

I agree that tree supports in Bambu needs a lot of work to even come close to cura’s solution. The few attempts I’ve tried to use it were obviously going to fail during printing. Some parts of the supports were literally floating mid-air and they didn’t even reach most of the surfaces that needed support.

Until this feature is improved i wouldn’t recommend it using it at all. the default support structure works fine in most cases.

I changed my Z top distance to.2 and they fall right off

I only use hybrid tree supports and sometimes depending on the angles will increase the support/object XY distance from the default .35mm up to .38 or .4mm

Z distance is similar with a .2mm default but if there is going to be a lot of support material for larger overhangs I’ll bump my Z gap up to .25

No interface used when I’m using hybrid tree supports but I will use the interface with normal supports for when I’m doing larger prints with big but simple overhangs

The only setting in interface that I’ll muck around with is top interface spacing which seems large at a default of .5mm but I’ve found bumping up my top spacing to .525 makes the removal peel off the model nicer and easier

I don’t bother with regular tree supports after one failed print using them because the default settings allowed a couple of the supports to break away and a failed 4 hour print 3 hours into it is a good enough kick in the nuts for me to avoid them until I adjust the settings and dial them in

But why bother dialing in regular tree supports when the hybrid ones work so good ?

Hybrid tree for me 80% of the time

Hopefully (even in a small way) what works for my particular style of printing works for you as well

Edit: I also have a custom .16mm slicer profile that i use so not factory defaults everywhere
Sometimes there’s quite a few small changes that make big differences

Who knows ? I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but I can still cut through a lot of the bullsh*t by keeping things simple, sort of, kind of, not really simple but not complicated. It’s complicated to explain but easy to do lol

Had the same issue. Learned, that if I cut the tree supports somewhere in the middle, near some branchings it removes some of their stability and they come of way more easily.

As a follow up to my reply earlier I did this print today using hybrid trees with my slicer profile support settings changes being the xy and z gaps increased

I printed it fairly fast so the quality isn’t the greatest but the supports (there was a lot) pulled off easily with very little messing around in the smaller tight spots

The color and the LED lights under my AMS show quality issues very easily, in regular light in a regular setting the print looks great

I doubt my mom will be holding an LED flashlight at just the right angle to pick apart the print quality lol

Her birthday is in a couple of weeks and she’s all about that equestrian life so I’m making her presents unlike my rotten brothers that buy her baskets with bath bombs and shampoo :nerd_face:

Agreed! I was unpleasantly surprised by it not using the support filament I had selected. Yes, it popped off easier than it looked…but I have support filament so that there is no risk of snapping wings and tails.

(BTW, I used JRock’s settings to make it better) than default)

I agree. That “fancy new option” is nigh useless with the current settings.
