I plan on setting up a test, but I’m waiting for a replacement filament buffer to come in… Mine has issues.

I have a pretty good idea on what kind of test geometry to use for it. … Hopefully it will arrive in a few days

I already did a test like that in the build plate thread with 1/12 scale gas nozzles. They failed twice on the Frostbite plate with a prime tower. Then I did it without a prime tower and it was successfully lol

Here is the test model I’m going to run,… and I’ll alternate the layer colors so it will test whats the minimum layer surface area you need, before you get bad print quality

Hey that is a good idea I like the model! On my print one of the gas nozzles just lost adhesion on the new Frostbite plate after 2 tries. It never failed before on the oem pei or supertac plate. Third try on the Frostbite plate and it succeeded when I took away the prime tower. It was while the printer went to print on the overhang that a gas nozzle fell. I think in this case it was a specific print issue because it printed the nozzle last up in the air and the prime tower was just causing the print head to move further away then come back to printing the 5 nozzles.

Now that it’s been a little over a year and a half since this thread was created, are prime towers still always necessary for multi-color printing? The object I want to print will be mostly dark blue but I have some debossed letters which will be bone white. My problem is that the prime tower wont move to the edge of my H2D’s build plate probably because both nozzles need to reach the prime tower.I can’t change the main part I’m printing because it’s a replacement part and the client wants multi-color printing rather than painting the letters herself (painting didn’t look good due to capillary action between the print lines).

Has Bambu Lab come out with any new updates or patches to make printing multi-color good even without a prime tower?

No changes have been made.

You have a couple of choices.

  1. Test

    Make a version of the model that contains the test area of concern and print it.

    If you didn’t make the model:

    • Use the Add Primitive option
    • Choose a negative shape
    • Size and move them to mask the areas that are not part of the test
    • Use the move tool on the model itself to move it down below the build plate if the test area is higher up the model.

  2. Tweak the Size

    Change the size of the prime tower.

    • Turn off the Rib Wall option in the settings tab Others, Prime Tower section
    • You can now change the dimensions, adjust this to a size that will fit.
