Dots, Commas, Underscores in STL and Folder Names

Currently, I am unable to upload files with names like Model XYZ 10.5mm.stl or Model XYZ v2.1.stl due to restrictions on characters such as dots, commas, and underscores. Same goes for folder names. These characters are essential for clear and standardized naming, especially in professional workflows, and should not present a technical issue in 2025 with modern file systems.

It would greatly enhance usability if these restrictions could be revisited and adjusted to allow such naming conventions. This flexibility is crucial for maintaining organized and descriptive file names, particularly in industries that rely on precise versioning and measurements.

I hope this can be changed @Tanklet

Uhl, have you tried using a file renamer? You might find that this is just the workaround that you are looking for because you will be able to substitute the periods with another character… problem solved! And with a good renamer you can batch rename. I use a renamer all the time… and I then don’t have to ask someone else to change how they work.

underscores work fine for me, dots i don’t use, so i never tried, as it can trick file extensions sometimes, so i don’t think that is a good practice anyways

Great for you. I’m not asking anyone to change how they work; I’m simply suggesting a quality-of-life improvement for both creators and users. I don’t understand why such a straightforward question has triggered such a strong reaction from you.

Out of curiosity: which character would you consider using as a decimal separator besides a dot or a comma? Those following characters are removed automatically:
.:,;_+~*#|!"§$%&/()=?´^°<>

Thats intersting, they used to work for me too but now they get removed automatically. These are some of the characters that are removed on upload (STL files, not the print profile):
.:,;_+~*#|!"§$%&/()=?´^°<>
Essentially, nearly every symbol on the keyboard gets removed, except for the apostrophe '.

Naming a file on a web-based service and storing or downloading it are two entirely separate processes. The file is not stored with the name you assign during upload.

If the file’s primary characteristic is its dimensions, how would you name it accordingly?

strange, that’s not the case for me, but again, i only use underscores:

i don’t do it myself, but if i would, it would probably be something like: name_x123_y456_z789_mm

It only works if the underscore is already part of the file name at the time of upload. If you try to type it into the name input field, it won’t work. Additionally, any preexisting underscores are removed when you modify the file name in any way. If an underscore isn’t an issue during upload, it shouldn’t be problematic when typed manually. So, this could be seen as part product request, part bug report.

That example isn’t quite relevant to mine. Integer numbers are obviously not an issue; my concern is with fractions of a base unit, like 20.5mm. Even if I had the opportunity to use underscores reliably as a substitute for a decimal point, I still believe this limitation is highly unfavorable for both creators and users.

I just tried “.” and “_”. They can be used in a file name.

Try uploading that same file and then add a random character somewhere:
Aufzeichnung2025-01-20140208-ezgif.com-video-to-gif-converter

In this example, the name wasn’t altered during the upload but changed when I added an “a” at the end (and the cursor jumped to the end). Normally, this happens immediately upon upload for me, even before focusing on the text input, hence my original post. Any special character I enter at this point is automatically removed as well, and the cursor jumps to the end of the input field. This behavior has been tested across multiple devices, including my smartphone, all running Chrome. I tested MS Edge too.

Thanks for the examples. It helps a lot!
We will add this optimization.
