Dual Materials

I have a part that uses two different materials, currently I have it setup so they print separately and then I assemble. Is it possible to print this as one with the two different materials to remove the assembly step? Blue is the main part, pink is the secondary.

I’ve attached two different angles of the part so you can see.

One way I can think of is to make use of the color painting tool in bambu studio to paint the secondary part with the color/filament type you want.

Maybe you can play around with this workflow.

  • Export the model as a .step file containing both parts, fully assembled, but as separate components/bodies.

  • Import the step file into bambu studio

  • select your first filament type/color, then add your second filament type/color in bambu studio

  • select your part in bambu studio and click “split to objects” the button on the top middle in your prepare tab that looks like two sheets of paper with an “O” on the fron

  • paint your secondary part/object with the second filament color/type using the paint tool.

  • slice and look through the result, layer by layer to see if its how you want it.

Note that if you don’t split into objects the slicer will try to merge the two parts into one when printing and will most likely lead to a failed print since different materials don’t always adhere well to each other.

I have never tried to print like this but it seems the slicer will allow it. Keep in mind that the different materials you print with may require different bed temps to adhere to the bed…You may run into some issues with bed adhesion on the smaller surfaces of the second part, and might need to use a brim to make it print .

It is absolutely possible. This is in fact how I do text in my prints. In CAD, I loft my 2D vector to 3D, with a thickness equal to some multiple of the layer height I intend to use. I align the outward face of the art with the outward face of what I want it embedded in to, and then I do a Boolean subtract so there’s a recess in the shape of the text in the face of my object. Then I export the object and the text separately. Then I open them both at the same time and tell Studio to treat them as separate parts of the same object. If I’ve exported my STLs correctly, the two objects come in perfectly aligned. I then select one or the other object and pick the filament color I’m going to print it with. But it could just as easily be a different type of filament.

If the part has to take a load, I would model it with some “interlocking” mating feature with what it’s attached to, so you’re not just relying on the interlayer bond strength to hold two dissimilar plastics together. Not all plastics like to stick to each other (PETG and PLA, for example).

As long as the Filament is compatible with the AMS and cross compatible on temps this should be do-able by including both “Solids” in one STL and just importing it as one object with multiple parts.

don’t screw up like I did and order the AMS for CF and TPU with PLA supports only to read the fine print on delivery that its not recommended for either.

Edit: I got around the temp requirement when I mixed PLA and PC by telling the slicer both spools were PC and just changing the temp limits while keeping the “PC preset” on the fake PC/pla profile. PLA is a wonderful support material for PC btw.

I want to print a box lid ( top cover) with PET CF and text with PLA White color.
so how should I do it?
I also want to know that CF is not suitable for AMS. if I have to print CF, do I have to do without AMS?
