Dual Nozzle Sizes on Bambu Lab X2D (e.g., 0.6 main + 0.2 auxiliary)

Currently, it seems the system does not support using different nozzle sizes simultaneously (for example, a 0.6 mm nozzle on the main print head and a 0.2 mm nozzle on the auxiliary head).

This would be extremely useful for real-world printing:

  • Use 0.6 mm nozzle for:

    • Faster infill

    • Stronger structural walls

  • Use 0.2 mm nozzle for:

    • Fine التفاصيل (text, logos, small features)

    • High-resolution outer surfaces

      This hybrid approach could significantly:

  • Reduce print time

  • Improve surface quality where it actually matters

  • Optimize strength vs detail in a single print

it’s a challenge that many people are trying to solve :slight_smile: this isn’t a hardware limitation, it’s a slicer one, and hopefully some coding genius will solve it and then it will find it’s way to all the slicers

Oh my goodness, just bought a new one just for doing so! Good to know this is not a hardware issue and can be solved…..hopefully soon!!!

0.2 on a bowden style extruder is also another challenge. It takes quite a bit more force to push the filament through 0.2 nozzle, even direct drives can struggle with this.

Thanks for the advice ! I misunderstood the topic, would like to print in just the opposite way, 0.8 Bowden - 0.2 or 0.4 on direct drive…, I assume this combination cannot be done either….

The issue is both hardware and software…. hardware part is likely easier, right now that isn’t supported (I think) but it’s not hard to run two different nozzles.

The more challenging part is the slicer software. How do you assign which to print with what nozzle? Right now you slice and it’s all same. You can add modifiers to certain parts of your model and modify certain settings but layer height is not one of them……yet. But what if it was? how do you tell the print that certain layer heights need to be printed with certain nozzles?

It CAN be done right now actually, if someone wants to type out the g-code.

My U1 supports multiple nozzle sizes on the toolheads but I can’t use them at once, I can however just pick the toolhead that I want to print with and that’s the nozzle for the entire print….this is the easy part, has been done…the hard part is doing it all on the same model.

Just hitting this for visibility, I would also like miss-matched nozzle diameter support. Like 0.2mm Main and 0.4mm AUX.

I understood that we can’t use two different nozzles on the X2D. I also understood that we can’t use a 0.2 nozzle on the auxiliary nozzle. How should I proceed if I want to print with a 0.2 nozzle on the main nozzle?

There are slicers that do this. I use ideaMaker on our Raise3d at work and you can select left or right nozzle for model, support, infill etc. It allows you to have 2 different size nozzles. It works well as long as the nozzle positions are calibrated. Its the only thing I don’t hate about the machine.

Now that I can post pictures, here is an example of the preview. Left extruder (0.4mm) and right extruder (0.6mm). This example is 2 seperate objects, but works the same for infill or support.

I cant get mine to even work. keep getting extruder failure back to one nozz;e

Install a 0.2 on the main?

First of all apologies for nos being active last month, quite busy. Appreciate all your comments and help, especially to momoprints for being so fast answering and giving very detailed responses. Couldn’t try much more, having problems with same 0.4 nozzles so wouldn’t want to go further and returned the printed due to a misalignment between the two of them cause a deformation of the structure when travelling in the box and a cap went away blocking the y axis. I bought this 3D printer to speed up supports with bigger nozzle for the auxiliary and detailed printings with the main one. I also wanted more detailed parts in my printings not slowing down the full process because of this problem. Hope this feature could be implemented at the end for being something in my opinion achievable with some investment on studying it. Thanks to Fineline_Hobbies for clarifying that there are other brands offering this features…..

@FABLuxES yes this is how I would love to print e.g. 0.2 nozzle on left primary nozzle and 0.4 on auxillary nozzle.
Hopefully Bambu is working on add this feature into their slicer.

For the other poster, you can just swap out the left 0.4 nozzle and replace it with a 0.2 nozzle and print without changing out the 0.4 auxillary nozzle. I think it just warns you that you cant use the auxillary nozzle in this configuration. This is how I printed, I dont know if you can print with the 0.2 in the auxillary (while 0.4 in left nozzle).

I have received reply from the Bambu Lab Customer Support on the issue of using different nozzle sizes and the main message is that they do not work on that but if more users would like have such feature included in the software, they will introduce appropriate changes.

So, whoever is interested, please, please open a ticket requesting feature of having possibility to print on two nozzles of different sizes at the same time. You can do it from your account level where you go to service center and describe the issue.

I find that response surprising given how users on the H2D forum want that just as much, if not more.

I don’t know the details of the actual code, but I suspect that it can’t be that much trouble to implement if you are just expanding the UI to handle the two nozzles. How is this managed on the H2C with multiple sizes available?

Also, I believe Orca Slicer supports it, so it can’t be that much effort to import that functionality into Bambu Studio if the code is already written.

I’m very sorry. Currently, we do not support printing with two different-sized nozzles. Some users use the auxiliary nozzle not only for printing supports but also for printing the actual model itself. If two nozzles of different diameters are used for printing, it may cause very serious printing quality issues.

Currently, we do not have any plans to introduce the use of different diameter nozzles in combination. However, I have already forwarded your feedback to the R&D team and the software team. If there are indeed more users expressing such a need or if this suggestion is highly valuable, we will release new firmware and software versions in the future to update this feature.

Allowing main nozzle to work with precision nozzle while using bigger nozzle for aux would be a total game changer for this printer. I am seriously surprised it has not been already implemented.

It really seems to be a major feature of X2D printer, it’s really odd that it’s currently not possible.

There is good news, Creality is pioneering this tech.

I have had SUCH a bad experience over the last 2 months with Bambu machines, Bambu support etc, that I just can’t bear the thought of ever giving them another cent. Creality might just be my way out!
