Anyway, I see that this particular version is a few versions behind the newest one and so I guess my question is whether I can just upgrade enough to take care of this particular issue and not be part of the entire “BL drama” of past months?

Yes.
Are you running Studio v1x on your pc? You can run the latest Studio version (2.02.02.56, I believe) without having to upgrade your printer’s firmware. It probably will prompt you to update, but you are not forced to.
edit/addition: The opposite can happen, though. A firmware update on the machine can require a Studio update on your PC.
I find this all rather humorous. Months ago I was aghast at narratives that filled this and other forums. Everywhere there were chicken littles, “the sky is falling, the sky is falling”. I tried repeatedly to get one of the pretended code warriors to explain where the malice was in the smoking gun code snippet they bantered about. I either got the standard talking points, or accusations of being less than intelligent, but no one was able to show, in the code, where the supposed malice was taking place. Not a single person all across the internet. However we did get lots and lots of misinformation that seemed to be designed to paint Bambu Labs in an unfair light.
Turns out the uproar was primarily over the fact the people would no longer be able to use their Panda Touch. Something that Bambu Lab was telling customers all along. Even the Panda Touch people where giving warnings that the product would one day no longer work.
I have updated my printers as the updates have become available as well as Bambu Studio. None of the claims made by the naysayers has come to pass. I don’t have to jump through security checks to use my printers. I am able to use any filament from any brand that I choose, and they all print just fine. The weird argument over security keys have turned out to be just as silly as when they were first claimed. The sky hasn’t fallen. If one reads the full story, in the end, the chickens are eaten.
So here we are, time and again, someone having a problem with one’s printer because one has been made too afraid to update one’s printer. Made afraid of things not real.
Thanks Ed. Sometimes it helps to put it all into perspective, a different perspective at that. Went ahead and updated, it all went fine and doing a print now. The process said it would take 10 minutes but it took 23 in my case and no, I did not freak out. haha
