I have had numerous problems with Superglue not sticking 2 PLA parts together recently. I even bought some better stuff and the accelerator and although that works for little parts, I don’t trust it for heavy duty connections. I am going to use EPOXY from now on when I want a guaranteed fix and that brought up a question as I like to buy bulk sizes to save money. Are most epoxies able to be considered adhesive? The little two part packages are kind of pricey when you can buy the big sizes typically used for crafts and stuff at a much better prices.
Thanks
Added: After some research on Google it looks like it will work just fine so I purchased the stuff in the link. I will report back later after I use it. If nothing else, the wife can use it for craft projects.
PLA and superglue is no problem if you do it right.
Main issues is not having an airtight seal between the joint - the glue will never cure.
If superglue is too brittle for the job I just solvent weld the PLA together.
Fun fact: Even the cheap PVC primer/glue combo from the hardware store works fine here…
Maybe I had some bad superglue as it was from the Dollar store no name brand. But I also read about numerous people having a similar issue on the print so it was likely a poor fit and a unique problem. It was one of those coffee cup splash things and there is also a wine goblet version of it. Even the original designer changed his notes to using epoxy after he updated the files.Good info on the PVC primer/glue as I usually have some of that around.
If you ever run into the problem again:
Clean the uncured superglue off using a bit of acetone.
Let fully evaporate.
Sprinkle some baking soda onto one mating face, preferably one you can secure so it won’t all fall off.
You can use a fine brush if required to make it an even surface.
Apply a good amount of glue on the other part and press them together in one move - you only have one chance here.
The baking soda fills minor gaps but more than that it make the glue set instantly and the baking soda goes glass hard.
Great idea. I read about that baking soda trick and watched videos on youtube but never tried it. Now I will. Isn’t there something about dangerous fumes when using that method? I will do it in a well ventilated area just to be safe.
Thanks
