I just got some Eryone PLA and I notice they’ve switched to a cardboard spool. Has anyone used these with the AMS? I’m helping a friend setup his brand new X1C & AMS. Anyone know if I need to print a plastic “ring” to make it compatible with AMS?
Technically no cardboard spools are compatible. It might work for a bit, but start having issues as the cardboard crunches/compresses. It can also start shedding cardboard dust which can cause all kinds of other mechanical issues. Best to use adapters or re-spool it in my opinion.
I got the input on this very forum to use electrical tape for masking the edges of the spool. And honestly it also works very well as this does prohibit shearing and is easy to apply once you are used to it.

Here is the thing: I would say Eryone spools don’t count as cardboard, because the rim has a plastic or wax coating. It feels hard and smooth, so for all intents and purposes, you have a plastic spool.
