I come to Bambu Lab from Qidi. I owned an X-Pro printer that was a dual extruder. I’m used to not having to do anything to swap filaments. With my new P2S, I’m wondering what the appropriate procedure is to swap between an external filament and one hosted in the AMS. Am I correct in assuming that it’s a manual process to swap filament from the external source and begin using one from the AMS? I know that the AMS can handle the swap on its own, but, I find that I have to manually unload the external filament before starting a print using the AMS.
First of all, welcome to the forum!
You are correct, the load and unload process for the external spool is very manual compared to the AMS. Unlike the AMS, the external spool has no method (motors) for loading or unloading filament. The reason you need to unload the external spool when you want to use the AMS is due to them sharing the same filament path past the buffer.
With a single extruder, you cannot mix external and AMS filament in the same job. One or the other. Technically it’d be doable, but it would be heavily dependent on manual operations in order to work. And if you had more than just a few manual switches, the impact on print time would be prohibitive. I’ve done jobs that had switches on every layer, 100s.
And if you don’t like disconnecting PTFE tubes to switch between AMS and External, you also need a 2-into-1 adapter between the AMS and the printer.
Note though that the single spool AMS HT has driven-rollers like the 4 spool version. I’d expect you could run a normal AMS and one of these as a 5th “external” spool.
But without spending more money, the answer is basically, “no”. ![]()
Guessing the OP has the P2S with AMS combo, based upon their post. If so, they don’t need an additional adapter since the buffer is a 2 in one with the combo. They’re just stuck feeding it in/out manually.
