I have a model with a recess to fit a standard 608 bearing. When I print it with Bambu PLA (Basic, Marble, Metallic), the hole is smooth and the seam is hardly noticeable.
However, when I print with Elegoo Rapid PLA+ black, the seam is thick and impedes with the bearing installation.
The screenshots below are just sample prints I did for the first few layers, but you can clearly see the thickened seam.
How do I resolve this? I’ve already tried:
- Ran a flow calibration and it’s at the correct setting.
- Lowered the filament flow ratio from .98 to .96 to .94, made no difference.
- Increased retraction from the standard .8mm to 1mm to even 2mm. Made no difference.
- Lowered the nozzle temperature from 220C to 210C to 200C. Made no difference.
- Enabled “Wipe while retracting” with 2mm wipe distance. Made no difference.
I know I can do shrinkage compensation, but that’d affect the entire model and I don’t want that. I also do not want to set the seam to “Random” as that’d affect the rest of the model.
What other filament-specific settings can I try to make the seam thinner like how it is when printed with Bambu filament?

It may be the fact that when your nozzle is leaving when the print is finished, some filament is still coming out. It has happened to me once before.
The prints in the screenshot are just from the first few layers as I was going thru many troubleshooting steps.
If you print out the full model, the bearing doesn’t fit in the hole unless I shave off the seam with a knife. The seam is noticeably very thick in the full model.
Not the case with Bambu filament, the bearing slides on easily.
I would move the seam somewhere else than
There’s nowhere else to “move” the seam. It’s an inner hole so a seam must exist.
I know I can also make the hole bigger to compensate, but I really want to get to the bottom of why this particular filament causes an enlarged seam. I want a filament-specific setting that works as I’m running out of ideas.
Not interested in any workarounds. I want a solution as this is a product I sell.
Ok, so it’s either A. The filament is wet. I would try drying it before you print a gain. B. Under extrusion C. There is small residue on or in your nozzle.
Did you calibrate the pressure advance?

Pressure advance aka Flow Dynamics? I’ve done that and the K-value is correct.
I see there’s another type of calibration called Flow Rate. Although I think that’s the same as adjusting the Flow Ratio, which I’ve already reduced to 0.94. I’m doing that calibration anyway. I doubt it will make any difference but fingers crossed.
If it was me, I’d try printing the Elegoo with the Bambu Basic profile and forget the calibration and see how that looks.

The Elegoo profile was copied from Bambu’s profile, so I’m already doing that.
For those looking for a fix. I added a cylindrical modifier to the bearing recess and turned off the Smart scarf seam application and Scarf joint for inner walls.
That made the seam much thinner across all filament types.

I’d be interested in replicating this, I’m wondering why the rapid pla+ behaves so differently with scarf seams even when calibrated. If you feel like sharing a repro 3mf I’d love to load it up and try it with my rapid pla+ here.
