Extrusion problem

I am having an extrusion problem that I can’t seem to fix. I have cleaned the extruder and replaced the hot end / nozzle. I dried the filament and tried multiple brands of filament. But he problem persists. Any suggestions as to what the root problem is and how I might fix it? Thanks for your help.


Have you done a flow calibration?

Since you changed the nozzle and cleaned the extruder, I’d check the PTFE’s for wear and good seating.
Maybe also try a manual feed through the AMS path and a print from the rear spool holder to help narrow down the issue.

This is what I get when I try a flow calibration.

That doesn’t look good. Have you cleaned your plate with warm water and soap?
Have you double checked your filament profiles for the filament you’re using?
Have you updated the printer firmware and the slicer to the latest software?
Have you tried using a different filament type on this same print?

Thank you for the ideas. I just tried a manual feed through the AMS and had the same issue. What is the PTFE that I should check for wear and good seating?

I dont have an X1 so this might be off base for it’s calibration pattern but:

It sure looks like the extruder is failing to get the prescribed amount of plastic out of the nozzle, and it comes out in little spurts. You mentioned changing the nozzle so we can rule out “clog”.

Be in the room with it, and listen carefully for the extruder gear wheel clicking and backdriving?

In addition/in concert to what Eno recommended, try removing AMS completely and loading from external spool. If it works fine from external, there’s something fighting the spaghetti from being pulled. Could be lots of Things©, AMS buffer/hub, the PTFE tubes, the rollers binding, etc, just need to work thru the possibilities.

Essentially, all the tubes carrying the filament from the AMS to the Buffer/Hub, onwards to the printer and from the inlet to the extruder head.

Since you have observed the stoppage when manually feeding through the AMS: Did you feel any particular little stops? That is where the tubes aren’t seated properly.
If you can not find such stops, a manual feed followed by a print from the rear spool holder would be the next troubleshooting step. If the print works, you know that your problem is in the PTFE path to the printer (worn tubes, worn couplers, tight angles, a longer than desired feeding path or you need to look at the AMS).
If the print does not work, you’ll need to look at the print head again (PTFE and coupler at the top where it enters the filament sensor, extruder [again], filament cutter, nozzle [again]).
