Feature request or advice: Auto-refill for 2 x AMS HT units with H2d

Set up: H2D printer with 2 AMS HT units, one connected to right printhead, the other to the left. Printing with one color of filament only, same filament type & manufacturer. Printing in common print area, i.e. the area that both printheads can reach.

Request: Would like to load both AMS HT units with the same filament, and have the printer automatically switch to the second filament spool when the first becomes empty.

AFAICS, there’s no way to do this. All of the “auto refill” functions only work with one 4-spool AMS (or a combination of AMS units) connected to one printhead.

This should be possible since the printheads have the same functionality in the common print zone.

If there’s a way to do this, kindly reply!

If not, Bambu, please consider this a feature request. It would be a huge leap forward in functionality for those of use who only have 2 AMS HT units.

You’ll need to elaborate on how you expect the slicer to account for the separate tool-head paths required. Why not simply connect those two AMS HT units to the same tool head instead?

I run two AMS HTs on my left tool head, two on my right, and two AMS 2 Pros on each side, and everything works flawlessly. So I’m struggling to see what you’re trying to achieve that isn’t already possible—and why.

Sorry it’s not possible with current bambu hardware, it’s not as simple as “if this then that”, which we all hoped it would be…

He wants the left hotend to continue right hotend’s task if right hotend runs out of filament. Which isn’t possible by the way gcode works.

This is a great idea, and perfect for users with two AMS HT’s who want to use auto-fill. The cost is having to switch one of the AMS HT’s back to the other tool head when the user prints with two different filaments.

Would like to use the H2D with 2 AMS HT units for autofill-enabled printing with 2 rolls of the same filament or use it to print with two different filaments – without having to:

  • Switch the PTFE tubes around behind the printer or

  • Buy another AMS HT or AMS unit or

  • Attach 2 AMS HT’s to one tool head and do dual filament printing with an external spool attached to the second tool head – leaving that filament in a high humidity environment; not optimal for hygroscopic filaments like nylon.

The reason I thought this would work is that the Prusa XL has a similar capability. On a dual head XL one can load the same filament on each printhead and when the first spool runs out, the printer automatically switches over to the second spool. If the XL can do this using two separate printheads, the H2D should be able to do this with one dual printhead.

TBH, it’s better to invest in normal AMS2 units, the AMS HT is a waste of money unless you need more than 16 filaments connected to the device.

Why?
First the temperature is a scam, it’s only reaching 85C at the hot air vent, depending on your environment temperature what you actually get can be anywhere from 70C to 80C ish.

Then the sealing is terrible, pretty bad at keeping the humidity low enough for engineering filaments.

And third, the bypass outlet is a braindead design that very hardly works with PPA-CF or other brittle filament, and it doesn’t work too well with TPU either.

So if you want something that is good at drying, go for a real dryer, then go for a couple real dryboxes (containers that is good at keeping the humidity low and has filament outlets).

A good combo can be, Space Pi X4 from Creality with a couple Cocoon units from Fusrock/Phaetus
