Designers should have the ability to define the order of their Print Profiles and raw files per model. For example, I would like to add a v2 version of a model but still keep the v1 Print Profiles available. In this scenario, when added, the v2 PPs are listed after the v1 PPs. I would need to delete the v1s and re-upload them to fix the order while losing the ratings. For the raw files this is less destructive as there are no ratings attached. This feature would be similar to how we can re-order images.
Following up on this, I’m also noticing that Print Profiles automatically change order based on which is rated the highest. If I have a model with several parts I usually publish Print Profiles in a logic order. Now I’m seeing the order of the parts change based on ratings which in these cases is confusing to end users and degrades the user experience. Great UI/UX design is about creating experiences based on how users’ already behave rather than trying to change user behavior to fit a desired outcome.
I am kind of new to Makerworld, but is it better to put the parts on different plates and have only one profile for the model, instead of each part having its own print profile?
I prefer to be more explicit with my content so it’s easy to see what’s happening at a glance rather than grouping everything together where the user has to dig in to get a clear picture. Any additional interactions such as clicking or downloading (*especially downloading) is a much larger user commitment than just viewing the model page. This is just my long-time experience as a UI/UX designer and from publishing content online.
I hear you. Just don’t know how easy it is to enable each creator to specify their own order preference, and have it isolated so they don’t get overwritten each time the platform updates. Maybe in the system sorting order they can add one more layer which is to sort by parts first before sorting by rating, but it will run into additional issues such as how does the system know which profile belongs to which part?
The functionality would be similar to Printables where the user has full control over the ordering of their files. I’d prefer the system not try to programmatically sort at all. I’ve built features like this before so from my experience it’s fairly straightforward from a technical perspective. The consideration with MakerWorld is that they’re automatically sorting based on rating rather than the preference of the content creator. They’ll have to make the decision to choose one sorting mechanism over the other. I understand that when this feature was designed it may have seemed logical from one perspective but there are many UX corner cases plus they’re limiting the control of the designer who actually creates the content in the process. It’s still Beta so it’s not a big deal short-term. However, long-term I would like more control over the content I publish.
I think Makerworld is different from others, in that it’s trying to create a platform that’s friendly to users who are completley new, who know nothing about 3D printing, and probably have no desire to know anything other than browsing through the models, picking a profile and print. From that perspective, soring by rating makes sense to the users, but not necessrory to the creators. You are right that it’s new and a lot of things can evolve as it grows.
Yes, I agree that’s their goal and also the design flaw. From a single-model perspective that makes sense and provides a streamlined experience for the user. But many models have more complexity and when a basic algorithm tries to reason about the best way to display the content, that simple and friendly user experience turns into a confusing and frustrating one. Let’s see how things progress. Thanks for the debate!
It is now supported to adjust the sequence of raw files. Please try it.
Is the ability to order print profiles going to be added?
Currently, it is not in our schedule.
Do you mean a designer can re-order the his own print profiles?
The ability to re-order print profiles fro a given upload. For AMS Glass Separation LED RIser by SpectreGadget - MakerWorld, I’ve added revised files, both raw and profiles as I’ve improved the model. I’d like to be able to make the “R4…” profile show on top since it is the most recent version. I don’t want to remove the older profiles as they may still be a better choice for some.
Hi, I think the ability for the designer to re-order their own profiles would be great. Sometimes the designer has multiple profiles that makes sense to put into a certain order (example, you have 5 sizes of a model and you want the order to be 1-2-3-4-5, not 4-2-5-3-1), and like OP mentioned - you have several versions and want to force the latest version to be first on the list so it’s easier for users to find.

I got what you mean. It makes sense and was added this to our plan list.
