I was browsing Makerworld for something to print I noticed someone added the filament they used into the maker supply. Is that the move? I kind of liked what I saw. i just never thought of it. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’ve seen this too, personally I think it’s pretty retarded. Very few people would buy a brand new spool (at least, not me) for a model that only takes 30 grams or so of plastic.
In other words, me no likey
There is a few cases where I like to know what filament they used, such as specialty filament, so that might be okay. But just throwing in PLA basic or matte and calling it good is a little weird in my opinion.
Personally I like it and don’t think it’s retarded.
People ask me all the time about the filaments I use. I’ve listed them out with store links in the past. This feels a little more integrated. People aren’t going to be purchasing filament like they would hardware, but it’s still a convenient add.
Additionally though, for the designer, it gives an avenue to get commissions off filament sales. Given you exceed the thresholds to make the model eligible.
It’s a great way for creators to list recommended (or used) filaments. I had people asking me “what filament you’ve used?” and now there’s a way to add it in a very clear way.
For me it’s more of “If you’d like to know this is the filament I’ve used/do recommend for this project” instead of “you need to buy brand new spool just to print my stuff”
Thats how I take it too. obviously no one is going to buy a whole new roll for a 30g print unless its actually required but at the very least pointing them to the exact filament you used is super helpful.
Does making that model a maker supply model help or hurt the listing?
I had the same confusion. This is related to the Creator Program. One has to be accepted into the program before eligible to earn commissions from such filament sales. Read the announcement thread to know more about it.
That option is there with new posts in general - or at least was for me when I posted my Clausometer so I selected the various colors since they were all Bambu. Now the silks I pointed to are discontinued so there’s that aspect as well.
Just checked though and none of the filament used are showing up with the model page that I see. They may only appear if you are in that program?
But only those who are in the Creator Program are eligible for the sales commision, that’s what I meant. For others, even if they can, there is no benefit to list the filaments in the BOM other than showing users what filaments were used in printing the model shown in the photo. One can simply state what filaments were used in the description instead of setting up the BOM box.
