I was under the understanding that if I ran out with AMS type of PLA in the AMS it would automatically change the filament when a run out occurred.
On several occasions I have verified the setting is set correctly and then started a long print only to be notified of the filament run out with no may to resume printing with a different bay of the AMS. The most recent print I started was with 4 rolls of filament (3 generic and 1 Bambu) I the AMS.
This seems like a very simple feature to implement, am I missing a step somewhere? Or is this truly not implemented yet?
The material type and color has to be the same. I set everything to generic black, and use up my short spools. I just lie to the AMS.
Based on this video the guys his AMS doesn’t show the colors are the same…

How do I change spools colors from Handy app?
In the video, the two he uses for the example (bays 1 and 4) are both gold pla… They don’t have to be in real life, but you have to set them as the same type and color in the AMS.
As for setting the colors in the app, I dunno. I’ve never tried. I always have set the colors on the printer when I set up my job. I don’t think you can change colors while you’re printing.
I have done this successfully, setting the colors for the AMS in the Device tab of Bambu Studio. It does work.
Once a print starts, changes made to the AMS will not go into effect until the next print starts. So changing it via the Handy app wouldn’t help in this situation.
In the video if you look at the image of the screen in the lower right hand corner, you can see that it doesn’t show the same color but maybe I’m just saying it wrong. Either way you would think this would be something very easy to implement in handy app.
If you’re referring to the AMS icon on the lower right of the touch screen, bay 4 appears black because the printer thinks it is empty.
I agree, it would be simple to implement in the app. They probably didn’t realize anyone would want to.
That’s why feature requests are important.
Black being empty makes sense! I put in the feature request via discord because it’s super simple to request and straightforward.
perfect. You never know if you don’t ask.
I had this happen today, was printing an AMS stack and it completely chewed up an entire spool. I sadly didn’t have the exact same filament on hand, but because Bambu Labs uses the reusable spools, I was able to pop the spool apart, remove the RFID from the cardboard core, remove the spool from the new spool (VERY CAREFULLY), swap the RFID from the empty to the new, holding onto the RFID so I can replace it later, and it just took off once I hit resume.
This isn’t necessary any longer if you have other PLA and have the AMS set up to auto refill
I’ll give that a shot next time.
Just now i hade the case where a Bambu PLA spool ran out and i had 2 other PLA spools in the AMS (although with different color) and could not switch to one of them as the “same filament is not available” … it would be awesome if i could just continue with a different color for parts where coloring does not mater at all …
The function worked for me this morning at 4:30am.As many have said it needs to be the exact same color. I had 2 spools of Bambu Gray PLA and when one ran it out loaded the second and started printing (I was not going to get up and load spools)… If you are using a generic profile then just make everything the same color and you should be ok. It might be nice for Bambu to add a function that would allow you to continue with the next spool in the AMS even if the colors do not match. ( note my OCD will not allow this for me…lol)
Here I am in August 2024 and I am running onto this issue. AMS ran out and the colors/materials were mapped the same but it’s not resuming.
Looks like I need to go back into the shop at midnight…
Also late 2024 with the same issue. This was my first attempt printing remotely and loaded 2 PLA matte gray spools, one full and one partial. Ran out of the partial and now I’m stuck not being able to finish the print with a fresh spool of the exact same bambu brand color filament spool adjacent to the empty in the AMS. This machine is absolutely amazing but this is a definite bummer. Hope there’s a fix coming soon!
