Filament dryer as a dehydrator?

Hi all

Slightly off the wall question. I know several people are using food dehydrators for filament. I just bought a Creality PI dehydrator to start messing with PETG and my kids asked if they can use the filament dryer as a food dehydrator.

What do we think?

Not a good idea, PETG and food, yuck.

Most filament dehydrators are lousy for food because they don’t exchange the air, so that moist air is replaced by new dry air.
For filament, it seems to work anyway because the total moisture content is quite low, but most food consists of 50% water or more, so that the air will be saturated early.

I also recommend no.
The risk is too high since the machine wasn’t designed for the purpose and thus didn’t need to comply (even if it did) with all food safety requirements.
Besides health, filaments (unless you soaked them) are relatively dry in comparison to food, so there’s a chance you damage the dryer.
