Filament flow rate calibration hassle?

Hi folks,

Context:
I’m pretty new to 3d printing I bought myself an A1 Mini to learn and play with while a shattered femur kept me out of my home workshop, now I’m hooked! I make mainly small functional parts for automotive and robotics applications. Currently I’m using my printer for prototyping and then getting a friend to print the final parts out of ABS and various nylons. I’d like to print my own final parts so am considering a P1S or a X1C or waiting perhaps for the new flagship…I’m currently spoilt by the A1 minis automatic flow calibration, I just leave the box checked and let it auto calibrate at every print.

Questions, if I get a P1S:

How variable are filament flow rates from the same manufacturer and material roll to roll? Do you have to do a manual calibration exercise new every roll?

Are some materials particularly more variable roll to roll?

How time consuming is the manual calibration exercise?

Hi there,

I’ve been printing on a handful of P1S printers for a while now, always using the same manufacturer and plastic type. For me, the printers have worked out of the box without a need for even manual calibration. Maybe it’s just luck, but picking the preset filament brand/type seems to work just fine and doesn’t need anything else. Especially not from roll to roll. Hope this helps.

What brands and materials do you usually print?

I use Overture PETG and haven’t had any significant issues, and the Bambu filament that comes with the printer has always worked too.
