Filament loading issue - nothing makes sense or does it?

I’ve always been able to fix issues but this one has me completely baffled.
I have 5 x P1S printers.
Does the following make any sense?:

Filament not loading. It gets to the extruder but not to the nozzle. 3 or 4 loading attempts then errors.

I’ve done all of the following:

Tried a different extruder and nozzle from a working machine. Still same error.
Tried a different AMS from a working machine. Still same error.

Put all those parts back in original machines, no problem with those machines.
Replaced EVERY bowden tube along the path. Still same error.

Replaced Filament Buffer with worknig one from different machine.

Reset machine. Reconnected wifi, recalibrated etc.

Still same error. What gives?

Scratching head, baffled. Before doing all the above I ordered a new filament sensor and filament buffer but can’t see any point in that now other than having spares.

Support answered after 3 days with a single question. I don’t think they even read my explanations. Sent them the log files yesterday. Still waiting for their response.

Anything bright ideas gratefully received. Being a printer down is a pain to say the least.
Thanks, Darren.

I am only replying because I had a similar issue though I did not diagnose as many things before I solved the problem, but I am sure you are more knowledgable than me on these things so I have a couple of suggestions based on what you haven’t said.

Could it be possible the AMS unit is knackered in some way? Have you tried to feed the filament into the nozzle using an external spool and see if that works? If it does, perhaps that could be an indicator something wrong with the AMS.

When loading the filament is that done by the screen on the P1S or via Bambu Studio? If one but not the other have you tried the other to see if that works or gives a different error message?

What about swapping the spool into a different slot on the AMS?

Just for my own kowledge and understanding, is there an error message shown when it fails to load the filament?

Also some other things (not sure if relevant) I thought ot:

  1. I presume all cables are plugged in properly and not loose (obvious but happens to all of us)
  2. Have you taken off the front cover of the nozzle head to ensure all the cables are connected inside and are not loose. Maybe disconnect and reconnect again to make sure.

thanks for your reply. No it’s not the AMS. The AMS works perfectly on other machines.
BUT I think I have found the problem. Staring me in the face! So If I take the hotend off and leave the extruder then try to feed it through using the extruder control on the control panel - no joy just a noise which got me thinking. The ONE thing I haven’t changed is the extruder motor. so I removed the extruder to reveal the gear. It was solid - wouldn’t turn. So I’ve just dismantled the toolhead and removed the motor. It is completely jammed up with gunk. Don’t ask me how! It would not budge. I’ve ordered a new motor but have since cleaned it up and lubed it. It now rotates nicely. So I’ll reassemble tomorrow and keep the new one for a spare.

Thanks for sharing your experience, this will help the rest of the community with similar issues. I’ll be looking forward to your follow up to see if this remedies the issue.

Good luck!!! :four_leaf_clover:

Thanks Olias, I reassembled it this morning, took 30 mins. Cranked it up and it’s working perfectly!

So as suspected, it wasn’t the AMS, the filament buffer, the filament sensor, the hot end or the extruder. It was probably the trickiest to fix, the extruder motor. But now I know how to diagnose it quicker - a) the motor gear should rotate by hand in it’s position in the toolhead and b) the extruder control at the panel should feed filament through it smoothly with nozzle removed.

As you say - I do hope this will help others…
