Prusa MK4s user here and just received my A1 Combo. My only concern is leaving filament (I only use PLA mostly) out in the open air at all times. Should this be a concern?
Ive seen an enclosure that can be printed which covers all 4 filament spools, although wonder if there is any other, easier, solution thats ready made already?
PLA is not TPU, so if you’re not living in ultra humid climate and leaving your spools out for months it should be good to go with occasional drying. I planned on printing enclosure for mine but never had a time and reason to. Anytime my filament does something silly - i just dry it and put it back on.
A quick look-see on MakerWorld shows that there are tons of open-air filament storage racks. If you live in a desert, or a very cold environment, I could see keeping your filaments on an open-air rack, but I would guess that most of the 3D printing world doesn’t live in either of those environments. If you live in a tropical or sub-tropical environment, humidity is a real issue year round. And even in temperate environments the relative humidity can be above 40% most of the year.
Not only is humidity of concern. If your filament is sitting out in the open, what about dust accumulation? [Arid environments tend to be fairly dusty.] And the stuff insects leave behind?
IftiBashir asked if there is any other solution available. Probably the best & least expensive is the use of “cereal” boxes that can be had for cheap on Temu. They seal very tightly, and so if you put a spool in with a bit of desiccant your filament may be ready to print right out of the box, vs having to wait a few hours while you dry it out in a dehydrator/oven. When you asked about “covers all 4 filament spools” do you mean the four spools in the AMS unit? If so, I’m not sure why you would need a separate cover. Maybe I missed the gist of your question?
