Filament stuck inside AMS system

I just finished one of my prints and it was pulling back the filaments and suddenly it just stopped. I tried to take the filament so I cut it because it was stuck and it would not move no matter what. Now it says that I need to take out filament before I can print. Nothing is in the PTEF tubes. I think there is filament stuck in the middle of my AMS system. I even looked inside of where the filament enters the system and couldn’t see any filament even with a flashlight. Any ideas for how to fix this or if it is a different problem?

okie dokie, easy peasy.

FIRST look for any unusually tight bends in the PTFE from the AMS to the print head. These will cause that error.

I know that says hotend but you need to get to the extruder which that will show. While you’re at either bookmark the wiki, will be very helpful.

Finding filament can be difficult as it’s not that easy to see always within the white ptfe tubes.
If I’m having an issue I start at the extruder. usually where it is and it’s usually just a tiny bit stuck inside. From there I go to the PTFE run to the AMS (our just to the connector at the back). In the AMS just disconnect where the PTFE goes into the AMS itself. If none there roll up your sleeves.

I’m not going to walk through it but it’s the first link. This has always been the last place it happens for me, and in 3 years I can say maybe twice, both my fault.

Ok. I think I will try pulling it out of the AMS. But how do you do that? I don’t just want to rip it out and break something

You want to go forward (towards the print head) if you can. Meaning if you can see filament between the AMS and buffer and can get to it, then pull it out towards the end that would lead to the print head.

On your AMS take any spools you may have out. If you have one that’s stuck cut the filament at least 2-3" from the feeder so you have something to grasp and see should you need to.

Where the PTFE goes into the AMS, on the inside, you should feel two flat parts, each one for a finger. Push down on those while pulling on the PTFE tube. It should come out. Is there any filament there?

If so, simply pull it out. Going that direction won’t harm anything, but don’t do it like you’re pulling a rip cord. Nice and easy should do it. Now if you left a little at the feeder, did it come out? If so great. If not…well it’s not great but nothing to worry about.

If you pull out the PTFE from the AMS and don’t see filament, then remove the end (if you haven’t already) from the buffer. Do you see filament there? If no, then good. If so then leave it, and head to the top of the PTFE run where it enters the machine from the back coupler. Remove the PTFE from the coupler. Do you see filament? If yes, cut and pull it out. Put it all back together. Shouldn’t be an issue now, may want to power the machine down and back just to be sure it gets its ducks in a row.

Check those first. I’m leaving out how to get to and pull from within the AMS or extruder for now, since the links pretty much cover it.

A word of important caution.
You absolutely want to avoid disassembling the AMS internal hub if at allbpossible.

Those magnets are a nightmare to get positioned correctly

I disassembled an AMS because it had filament hung up in it and figured nbd so took it all apart.
Had to drive 30 minutes each way to go to Harbor Freight to get a magnet which is about mandatory so if you decide to take apart, have magnet in hand BEFORE taking apart.

I think I have to. I can see a small strip of filament in the PTEF tube at the bottom of the AMS. It keeps trying to pull it out for about 20 minutes until I turn it off. I can’t print until I get it out
