Filament won’t go into extruder and there is no clog

I have a similar situation with Walter_Mitty (love that short story BTW)

I am using the X1 Carbon. I’ve had the printer for well over a year - and generally happy with it but occasionally a problem comes up.
I tried loading a new PLA spool (spool is external, no AMS). It is not extruding properly. Prior to this problem, I was using the printer in the same configuration with no issues.

When loading the filament, I come to an error at step 3:

  1. Heat the nozzle
  2. Push new filament into extruder
  3. Grab new filament
  4. Purge old filament
    The error reads:
“Please observe the nozzle. If the filament has been extruded, click “Done”; if it is not, please push the filament forward slightly and then click “Retry”. [07ff 8007 134705]
I will then slightly push the filament forward and I get the same error again.

I checked for a clog. I removed the hot end and removed a piece of filament left over from the previous spool. Afterwards, I was able to manually feed in the filament and get it to come out the other side. I thought the problem was solved. I reassembled and tried reloading the spool and it seemed to have loaded properly.
Next, I did some calibrations (flow dynamics and flow rate). Nothing printed onto the cold plate. Not good.
I checked the tubing that guides the filament and there doesn’t appear to be an issue there.
Help!

If it extrudes when you push the filament, but not when you command the printer to extrude, it means either the pinch wheel is not squeezing the filament hard enough or that the extruder Stepper Motor is not working.

Thank you Randy.

I took the tubing off the extruder and voila…there was a piece of tape jammed in there. Problem resolved. I did a test print and things are back to normal.
