Filment stuck in extruder after spool ran out - push through or pull out?

My spool ran out right at the end of a print and the filament is now stuck around the extruder area, as shown in the photo.

The AMS now won’t feed new filament through. I’ve also tried manually using the printer controls to load/feed filament, but it stops before pushing anything through.

What’s the best way to fix this?

Should I:

  • Heat the nozzle and try to push new filament through from above with another spool, or
  • Try to pull the remaining piece back out of the extruder?

I can see the end of the filament just above the print head, but head detects it and wont feed in AMS.

Has anyone had this happen, and what’s the safest way to clear it without damaging the extruder?

Use the filament cutter manually (just squeeze it gently), detach the PTFE tube, and pull out the remaining filament.

Please let me know if it worked!

Did you check that all the tape that holds the end of the filament to the spool is still in place ?

I’ve heard some horror stories of bits of tape being pulled in on the end of the filament at the end of the spool and getting stuck in the ams motor or being pulled through into the extruder motor.
