First layer after support looks unclean / bad

Hey everyone!

I’m a fresh beginner to 3D printing and am currently trying to create my first “decent” print of a ring.

I’m using the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon 0.4 nozzle & the Textured PEI PLATE

I’m using PLA-CF filament in black for the ring and BAMBU PETG in red for the support.

Now to my problem:

The first layer of the ring, which is printed on the support, is always very “unclean” after removing the support. I have already tried reducing the speed for the first layer, but that didn’t help either.

I would be very grateful for any tips and tricks!

Attached you will find pictures of my settings in “Support” & “Others ( I only disabled the Prime tower)” as well as of the ring bottom surface and the “problem” as well as the top surface and what it should look like.

I’m not sure what you’re expecting with supports but they are never going to look as good as the rest of the print especially if you are using the same material for support/support interface. It’s just how current FDM printing is. You can tweak it to be marginally better but it’s usually better to just design/print parts so they don’t require support. You could cut the part in half and then print the cut side on the bed followed by gluing the two parts together. Ideally you would use a smooth bed plate for this technique.

I understand that the ring is PLA and the support PETG.

  1. Have you tried changing the orientation so that the ring is upside down, with the top placed on the bed?

  2. Then manually paint organic support to hold up the bridge (the top of the loop). The support can also be PLA-CF to minimise filament swaps, but make a thin interface layer out of PETG or even better PVA Support for PLA where the organic support touches the underside of the ring between -45 to 45 degrees from the vertical (i.e. the top 90 degrees).

  3. Try the 0.08mm High Quality pre-set process.

  4. Slow the speed to Quiet.

It’s a small part, so the very slow, fine print will still be done in a reasonable time.

I see, thank you very much. Preferably I would love to print the ring in one, and not just glue it together later but I will try that anyway. Thanks!

This would print it one piece. Definitely no gluing required. If there’s some relief on the top that you’re concerned about, PVA Support for PLA beneath the inverted top may preserve that so that it’s a one-piece print. I’m not sure what the quality on the top will be, but if the support separates or is dissolved, then it may be good.

I am not sure that I understood entirely what I should do here, so for the Support I use the option “tree (manual)” paint the object where I want the supports and then arrange the degrees?

How so? I would divide the speed it requires per pre-set down to about 50% of it, correct?

So this was my result after your advices.


As you can see now, the top of the ring, the square surface, is again really weird and takes the design of the interface.

The supports from the tree-support leave the same weird spots on the inside.

Any solutions? Preferably I would love to have the square looking like the rest of the outside, just “clean”.

I was so hoping that this would work out better. Thanks for the feedback and sharing your photos. Maybe someone else can give some advice on how to print rings with better results using FDM, short of using resin printing.

The way you described painting support manually is exactly what I had in mind. Di you use a different (non-stick) filament as an interface layer between the support and the ring?

I used PLA for the support branch as it is, and PETG for the layer between support and ring. Was easy to break away! Sadly it left this pattern on the ring.
