First layer doesn't print in a specific part of the plate

When asking for help, please provide as much information as possible about your inquiry.
This will help everyone to better understand your problem, and provide you with the best solution.

  • Detailed description of the problem
  • Printer model used

  • Any potentially useful information that is related to the problem

Hello all,
I am going crazy trying to fix this. For starters, I’m on a P1S, using an AMS2Pro, textured pei plate (SCRUBBED CLEAN), SUNLU PLA+ 2.0 (my go to that has worked great) using the SUNLU PLA+2.0 settings in bambu studio, (I’m using Bambu studio)

I am attempting to print this file Easy-Rearrange Shelves for Filament Containers - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld

I have done a cold (atomic) pull
completely disassembled the extruder and cleaned everything
replaced the pfte tube going from the nozzle to the back of the printer (more of a since I was there type thing)
Full cleaning - z axis screws (cleaned and new lube), x axis rods (IPA only) ensured no bits of filament in the bearings, case all vacuumed out.
full calibration (the 26-30 min one) 5 TIMES!
tried different filament
tried different prints (had success with one of those filament calibration tests that was a small thing in the center of the plate - no purge line on that print though)
also tried a “first layer test” print, still no printing in the same areas.
I have tried this plate and a different (smooth) plate
I always have auto level on for every print

Basically, a corner of my plate gets no first layer. I let the print continue to try and see if it was a wire issue or something, like maybe when the head is over there, it doesn’t extrude, but the 2nd layer proves that isn’t the case. I am really at a loss. no idea what it could be. Up until this most recent attempt (I’m at like number 10) I was getting no purge line at all, you’ll see in this one that is “spotty”
I would love some help, your thoughts, prayers, a séance, anything. My printer was working beautifully three days ago and now it has become a nightmare.

Pictures are basically in reverse time order, start from the bottom and go up.

^This is where the first layer SHOULD be, so I am curious why it extrudes here, but not on the first layer (I guess I am assuming it isn’t extruding, no spaghetti)

not sure why the “specs” of filament here, again it isn’t like it is printing into the air and not sticking, it is like it isn’t printing here at all.

Notice the “incomplete” purge line

Last pic is from a previous failure where I also wasn’t getting a purge line.

Welcome. Random question… but what happens if you flip the plate over and try the other side.

This is a really strange one. Here are a few ideas:

  • You said you cleaned out the printer. Are you sure there is nothing imbedded in the magnetic surface of the print bed?
  • Have you checked all of the screws for the hot end and the Z-axis rod followers?
  • Have you tried performing the tramming procedure to verify the print bed is at least close to level? Manual Bed Leveling / Manual Bed Tramming | Bambu Lab Wiki

no printing at all it does not even try when over there or does it spaghetti could the plate not heat up there?

Not printing at all, no spaghetti is the weird part to me.

I’ll try and report back. But I tried on the 2 side texture (only one side as you guessed correctly) and then a separate smooth plate. I’ll try what you suggest.

seems like a studio thing if it is always in the same spot try Bambu handy

and see if the file is corrupted I tryed to print a bad file on my p1s and it did a very similar thing

Verify if the first layer in BS is the same like your picture.

Slice → preview, drag top layer down to layer 1, like this

It seems the problem was repeatable for you at the same spot and it was likely the same for first print and second print after that.

Try replace the hotend assembly with spare hotend that known to be working, new hotend assembly would be better for this. This to make sure no nozzle clog.

You can check if extruder is working just fine: Remove the hotend but keep connector plugged to clear the pathway of filament after extruder. Then manually spin the yellow gear and see if filament is coming though the extruder, doing this while there is no hotend blocking filament coming out. Do this while printer is powered off. After that you can do the same but this time use BS or little LCD screen to extrude a bit of filament and observe if the yellow gear is spinning freely.

You can also monitor if the yellow gear is spinning when it is printing the “missing area” of first layer. This will give more clue of what is going on there.

FYI, “full calibration” does nothing except for conpensation of input-shaping while printing at flying speed. I also doubt if that calibration is also used for tuning stepper motor for noise reduction, IMO, it is totally useless for solving extruder intermittent problem.

Not printing at all, no spaghetti is the weird part to me.

going to try tramming/leveling now

We need to know the specific problem before we can correct it.

Watch the nozzle as it prints the first layer in this corner.

  • Does the nozzle even travel to this corner?

Does extrusion stop when the nozzle enters this area?

Does the filament extrude but fail to adhere?

Hmm, thought I clarified that. But yes, the nozzle travels to the corner, and there is no extrusion there, on the first layer. There is no spaghetti or failure to adhere

as you see, the second layer extrudes, so I too am at a loss here.

It looks like reaching that corner forces the PTFE tubing and the extrusor skips. Do you ear any clicks in the extrusor? Is the PTFE tube stiff in that position?

All, I SOLVED my problem. It turns out that the toolhead cable where it connects to the toolhead board was almost completely disconnected, like literally the pins just sitting on top of each other. Which makes me think in the far position where my errors were, the connection was lost. I ensured the connection was corrected and have since been printing (the troublesome file) without issue.

specifically, this cable ↓

Thank you ALL so much for your help, I truly appreciate it.
