First layer gaps

Hi, I can’t rid of gaps on first layers. I tried almost everything:
Different layer width and hight
Wall generator
Initial layer flow ratio
Different bottom surface pattern
Different initial layer infill speed
Also I tried bed tramming

Have tried swearing at it already ?

If so, don’t bother as I do it all the time but it won’t help

Jokes aside though:
Take a look how your first layer prints.
Your model comes with an awful lot of individual patches, rather than a solid filling.
I am almost certain you will be able to observe that the filament curls up or drags along here and there.
Maybe even that the beginning of a new line is just too flimsy and thin…

  1. Retraction…
While we often need it, it can also be a pain in the behind.
Like when one line is done and the next fails to get enough flow from the start.
Print some test model(s) to hone in the retraction so it works best for the filament at hand.
If it is a general problem that the start of a new line is too thin:
Add a little extra for pushing the filament back, like 1 to 2mm.
If that creates blobs go down a bit.
The retraction speed can also be a factor…
It is often beneficial to lower the speed to just 20 or 25mm/s.

  2. Temps…
The bed should be at a temp that allows good adhesion without keeping the filament too soft.
Means that if you stop the first layer the filament should be stuck to the bed.
If it lifts off very easy there is a problem, if it stick like hell and comes off like chewing gun there is another problem.
Try to find the golden middle
First layer extrusion temps are often increased a bit to provide better adhesion.
Not every filament needs it and in some cases a LOWER first layer temp can help - especially if the first layer speed is also VERY low.

  3. Underestimated tweaks…
If you increase the first layer width the resulting lack of resolution is often not as bad as it seems.
Especially if Arachne is used for the walls.
Last but not least: Cheating
Not only does it provide a smooth start for the actual print but it also can provide a better look…
An added single layer printed in clear, translucent filament…
Bit of a hassle in Studio but quite simple to add in a half decent 3D modelling software.

recently I found first layer gaps simply because my garage temperature drops. I added flow rate and it works fine now.
