First layer inconsistently 'rough' or 'smooth'

Hi everyone. I am enjoying my X1-Carbon printer for printing low volume parts for a commercial product. I am using Bambu black PLA on 0.16 optimal standard setting with no customisation. The problem I have is sometimes the first layer is ‘smooth’ and fine for the product, but often it is ‘rough’ as if it is the 2nd layer and I cannot use it. Even when I select ‘print again’ the next print might be smooth or might be rough. :face_with_raised_eyebrow: The pic shows the 2 surface finishes, ignore the reflection on the ‘smooth’ left one. How do I make it always ‘smooth’?

Are you using automatic flow calibration? I haven’t had problems with it with black but mine is matte. Perhaps its not the best for auto flow calculation.

It sounds like you want to manually calibrate the filament and turn off the auto calibration, at least that is what I would do. In the calibration tab of bambu studio (or orca) you can calibrate the pressure advance and flow rate of the filament using built in tests. Then you can be sure you are getting the same tuned settings on each run.

Thanks Lenyo. I have used automatic flow calibration, but not between the runs where it ‘smooth’ and ‘rough’ which suggests the flow changes somehow without a change of settings. Anyway I will try manual calibration and let you know how I get on. I presume ideally I need a bit more flow?

It might also be a bit less, assuming all other variables were unchanged, like a draft coming in etc. You’ll see with the manual test that both ends of the spectrum exhibit a similar effect.

Hi Lenyo, I followed your suggestion and it works a treat. Well the small test bit I have tried looks great and am now printing the important one now. Thanks again.
