I’ve been printing fine for about 1-2 weeks since I got the X1C with no issues. All of a sudden some of the more complicated models the first layer just doesn’t work properly. I’m not totally sure what else to try. I’ve cleaned the bed with soap and water, checked nozzle for debris. Reset printer, Re-calibrated everything. Any advice would be appreciated.
Obviously some of the filament is not sticking to the bed, but where it does stick there are many gaps in the extrusion. PLA is pretty resistant to moisture absorption, but I would try drying the filament, just to be certain. If you don’t have a dryer, an empty spool box and your X1C will get the job done.
The recommended times in the wiki are good, but sometimes you can speed things up if you have a digital scale. Record the initial weight of the spool, dry for a few hours, weigh, dry another hour or two, etc. Stop drying when the weight stabilizes.
I’ll try the alcohol, how do I decrease first layer print time? Is there a reason it worked flawlessly at a 55 bed temp and then all of a sudden it just has issues in only some places of the bed. The filament sticks actually very good on it I’m not sure why in some areas it messes up.
Yeah I noticed some gaps. Is this due to the filament not dry enough? I think it may be this model specifically because when spliced I can see the gaps in light grey maybe you can test this model for me and see if you get same result on first layer? Would be very helpful!
Possibly.
Moisture in the filament boils in the nozzle, causing uneven flow and pushing out only steam at times. So the lines can be laid down unevenly, with gaps.
There are other things that could be wrong, but dryness is essential and easy to check and fix. If you were getting good prints and now you are not, something changed without your being aware of it.
Do clean the plate before you try again, it’s one of basic requirements for printing, like putting gas in the car. I like washing with Dawn or other good grease-cutting detergent and a thorough rinse. Don’t touch the print surface.
The texture is great for hiding fingerprints. Dirt and oil may not be the problem, but when trouble occurs it is best to verify the basic requirements for a good print.
I tried the model and printed it on my X1C.
It worked, so it is possible to print it. But the difficult part is, that it prints a lot of not connected short strings on the plate. This strings are only connected after a while, to one piece.
I have experienced this also. This is an orientation problem with the model. My solution was to ensure that the model was flat on the plate.
If this is a collection of objects, then go into the “Objects” tab select each item and be sure that it is flush with the build plate. Then select the top most item in the object list and select “Global” Tab. Click on the model, select All, and then the “Lay on Face” icon. That should show all of the objects on the build plate after slicing.
Sounds frustrating! It could be an issue with bed leveling or adhesion. Since you’re printing more complicated models, like a drink coaster, you might want to try adjusting the Z-offset slightly, use a glue stick or hairspray for extra adhesion, or slow down the first layer speed. Also, check if the nozzle is heating properly. I hope this helps!
