Try to avoid touching the build plate with your hands. Our skin has all manors of oils that easily transfer to the build plate if touched. Even that minute amount can cause filament not to stick to the plate.
So be sure to wash your build plate with dish soap (degreasing) and warm water. This will ensure all oils are removed. Between prints I usually just use a micro-fiber cloth to wipe down the build plate, then only wash it when that stops working.
Following these methods I have very rarely needed to actually wash my build plate. If you do your best not to touch it, and wipe it down regularly, it will treat you well!
Once exception for me has been PETG, that stuff just seems to be extra messy and requires washing more frequently.
