First print with X2d, COMPLETE FAILURE

Just got my new X2D, my 4th Bambu Labs printer. Took time setting it up correctly, combo unit with AMS 2 Pro, as I’m used to using on my H2S. And, then tried to print multi filament print as my 1st print. Failed 100%. Not happy at all. Once the print got to the 2nd filament, it would not feed into the printer. Stopped somewhere in the feed unit on the back for the main left extruder. All filament was perfectly dried (I’m not new to this, have many driers and such.) But this is extremely upsetting. After spending years (20+ as an enthusiast, not “pro”) with other printers, Creality and others…. I jumped into the Bambu labs World last year with the H2D and then others. So much better, until now. I had high hopes for the X2D, that it’s frustrating to be greeted with failure day 1. Grrrrrr.

This is so upsettingly crazy.

Seems the filament path is too complicated. I appreciate Bambu trying to go beyond the norm. This needs work though.

When I got my H2C, it wouldn’t feed reliably. Took me a few hours to figure it out. Combination of alignment of the PTFE tube inside the coupler at the back of the machine, and too “acute” an angle for the tube coming from the AMS. Filament was binding and if it didn’t bind, it got caught at the coupler. Making sure the PTFE tube was fully seated (it got “hung up” partway in and felt like it was seating until I finally pushed harder), and that the AMS wasn’t too close to the wall behind the printer cured the problem. Creeping up on 1000 hours, all with the AMS in operation, haven’t had a single issue.

Totally appreciate the feedback. I will dive into this issue tomorrow (gotta destress a bit…) During assymbly I attempted to ensure all PTFE tubes were as good as they could be. First filament fed correctly as well.

I do think my issue as is as you described it. PTFE binding. But why? I’m not worried by the Right side extruder, seems to me Boden style is not bad, with exception. But to get bound on the main extruder just set me off in rage. (yeah, venting, thanks for accepting….)

The filament path struck me as odd to start with. Why the extra path in the back rather than a direct feed into the back? Of course in my case it got stuck after that extra path part. I’m not looking forward to finding it’s clog point…

I don’t own a X2D so I can’t really comment on anything specific. Just wanted to offer a possibility for you to consider based on my own experience. These machines are complex, and with added complexity comes more things that can go wrong. But it’s important not to overlook the simpler stuff.

Thank you for your input. Complexity considered. Yet, consideration of open market applied…. your personal experience is not equally applied to the efforts of Bambo Labs efforts to push their devices to the public in general, of which I will insert I don’t apply being a long term enthusiast. Thanks for your input, it truly does not apply.

Same here, brand new AMS 2 pro. At the first try the filament on all 4 positions did not push the filament to the tooldhead. Older AMS 2 pro never failed (the first time). So I tried, retried… and finaly it worked. basicly the ‘PFTE-road’ needed a ‘brake in’ (not perfect assembled). Looks like the QC on the products are not what it was.

After a few more retries, I have to agree with your assessment too. Seems the new AMS 2 pro setup, along with the complicated filament path may just need a “break in” period, fingers crossed. My other AMS 2 pros have their issues too (sticky feeding motors…), but this initial issue definitely caught me by surprise. I do hope things improve as my X2D ages.

Hey everyone,

I’m having the same issue with a new Bambu Lab X2D printer and AMS. It won’t push the filament through, and after troubleshooting I realized the problem is with the feeder funnel. As soon as I slightly moved it, the filament went through.

I’m currently waiting for a solution and response from Bambu Lab, since I don’t want to deal with fixing something I didn’t cause.

Well, I ran across something in the Bambu Labs Wiki. Turns out Bambu knows about this. It’s been occurring with the P2S, and now with the X2D. Some filaments just hang up way too easily in the complicated path on the backs of these machines. Specifically they stated PLA Silk and other “soft” filaments. My experience was with PLA Silk. So, they are aware but for some reason there is no good solution yet. Seems to me they need to re-engineer the filament paths on these and/or future machines to be less comlicated. Heck, even get the new Filament Track Switch and they state you should print some special components to fit on the back of the AMS 2 Pros to make the PTFE tubes have less angles on them to help filament feeding. I’m afraid that this is a lost cause though. Just have to deal with some filaments not working well on the dual extruder printers from Bambu Labs.

Is there a way to load and unload filament from AMS to extruder outside of a program? Sort of a test run for the filament pathway?

I did a number of load/unload after my first print failure. Some filaments do great, others not so much. After quite a bit of messing around with PTFE tubes and connections, I was able to get some satisfactory results. I fear this is going to be a constant fight though.

I’ll definitely keep an eye on this thread, and keep this in mind. The X2D will be my first filament printer and while there are a lot of good channels doing reviews right now it’s issues like these that seem to get either missed or mitigated by some of these reviewers sheer amount of experience without really thinking about it.

Maybe just to offer some hope…our X2D with 2x AMS 2 Pros and the track switch is working quite well. I did have a couple warnings about feed resistance but they disappeared after I adjusted the PTFE tubes.

Will you be trying different filament combos to see what is/not possible with the aux hotend? Based on the wiki, which filaments work where seems to change a bit after the track switch is installed.

Which filaments will work is mostly conjecture at this point. Some will have more problems than others due to how soft they are. That is all you really need to know. And that is the case with BOTH extruders on the X2D, though the Bowden side is expected to have more issues with softer filaments. Applying rocket science here is not quite a perfect application. Some may have more luck than others. This has been somewhat shown with the H2D and H2C so far, which both of those printers also have limitations listed by Bambu on filament choices.

I own a fleet of bambu machines with AMS units running 24/7 including X2D’s.

99% of the time, AMS feed errors (where there isn’t broken filament in the buffers etc.) are due to routing of the PTFE tubing. This is really highlighted if your tubing is just “hanging” in the air (aka gravity) and not stricltly held into a certain position to maintain the gradual bends going from the AMS to the buffer, to the feeder inside etc.

IMO, and in my experience., placing an AMS directly on top of the glass of a unit is always the “last resort” placement of the unit. The PTFE tubing will flex and move while feeding filament which causes binding. Every AMS unit i have has been transfered to an elevated position which sits close to the steel wall behind them (these are in a shop) so the bend in the tubing is maintained by the presence of being up against the wall.

Once you are able to stop the PTFE from moving and maintaining a nice gradual slope, the feeding remains perfect.

My .02c and experience. I started off with all sorts of intermittent feeding errors until I did that. Now I have none and haven’t had any for months on end running 300kg of filament monthly.

So what is you proposition? To hang the AMS by itself on a wall?

The proposition is to keep the PTFE tubing from being able to flex and move all over the place when loading filament.

One suggesttion is to have the AMS close enough to a wall the wall takes all the deflection out of the tubing. I’m sure there are clips that snap over the tubing that could do the same thing, or you could print some etc.

I chose wall because I have shelving I built for that purpose. Last thing I wanted was all the heat of the glass going full blast into my AMS units (only print high heat engineering filaments) as well.

Hence why I was asking someone who has it “working quite well”, to get their opinions on what works best and what isn’t worth bothering about.

Im.having the same exact issue as you’ve described. Ive had my printer for only 5 days. From day one the ams has been giving me random feed errors. Now ive been using mostly elegoo cardboard rolls. Im waiting on my bambu filament. I was hoping that might help this issue. A friend of mine got the.same prinrer and uses only sunlu filaments. He hasn’t seen this issue. I even printed some elegoo spool adapters. It gives a solid round edge to the spools. Im still getting this issue intermittently.
