Firstly, I want to thank you for the amazing printers you have made

But While your printers are amazing, maybe you should stick to that. Because I see more and more issues with the MakerWorld (more posts on forum about issues not just me personally).

Last week I made a topic about how random the contest results are and a lot of people agreed that there must be some sort of transparency on how the winners are chosen.

I had my hopes that we, the community, will be heard by someone behind the MakerWorld, however I was absolutely wrong. And todays contest results of Valentines day contest are a proof of that. Last time I kept it cool regarding the winning designs - there were some reasons why more popular designs did not win (they were made for “Year of Dragon” not “Chines New Year”. But todays results are an insult to everyone who put hours in to make designs.

I spent 3 minutes to find 5 desings that 100% should have been between the “excelent participation” winners if not the top 3. and you will not convince me that not a single one of these 5 designs was better than anything in the top:

Just look at the likes and downloads. and they are still way higher on trending page than some of the awarded models.

And don’t start with “we don’t need winners based on downloads” because everyone agrees with that. But we also don’t need winners based on “let’s just randomly choose a design, bonus points if it has Chines letters in the title/description”

Honestly this competition really hit me as I was looking at the entries and understood that my entries are not good enough as there were so beautiful designs that were loved - some of them I mentioned above. And I would not have been mad if I lost to them.

But these designs in the top are not that good and neither they have gathered support from MakerWorld’s community.

You will never convince me that “Daisy earrings” that have nothing to do with Valentines day would beat my heart shaped torture box. I put a picture of them next and if you say that earrings are more in line with Valentines Day and better design then please, explain exactly how? Only thing regarding the Valentines day for them is the text on the circle added to the box.

This was my second and last post regarding the competitions. I have an entry in the “Lights” contest, but it’s terrible compared to others (so maybe I actually have a massive chance at getting award)

So if you don’t want to be let down by some unreasonable results, I would suggest keep your expectations to win as high as if you had not submitted any entry. As it really seems like a lottery.

So sad to see such a potential of a place to be wasted.

Gosh u simply dont get it do you… That rose bear, a great design i might add, was an older model and doesnt qualify for winning…Little tired of hearing u complain tbh…They ve just announced and here u are

Alright one of five was older design, what about 4 others?

I have only made two posts and your “tired of me complaining” is like I would have done it for the whole existence of MakerWorld.

If you don’t agree then feel free to explain how some random earrings are better than the four other designs (let’s be real earrings are nothing new too) and furthermore, how are the earrings better than my design. of course the personal preference is a huge factor. But for such competitions it should be based on something to make it fair.

For example, my favorite was the box with a customizable name. that’s a wonderful design and please explain how it’s worse than earrings if you are so sure that my complaining has no grounds for it.

Im pretty sure ive seen that slinky somewhere before, and a box full of roses? Really? What would the designers for roses think if they rewarded that? Dont get me wrong i know nothing about CAD so using this platform has been a blast, and ive liked most of the contests too. I do think your design is great and have a lot of admiration for designers in general. I guess my point is that i do understand why the winners were chosen. They usually post the reasons for why the top 3 winners are selected in their sm post, and that is a lot better than other platforms where we have no clue why certain models were selected as contest winners

Thank you for the positive view of my design, appreciate it.

Well the box of roses design , in my opinion, was way better and deserving of at least some award because it was customizable - the author actualy went out of his/her way to explain how everyone can customize the name for the box for their needs.

Regarding difficulty, Yes it might seem easy as that are just roses, I will agree with that - it seems easy (not fast though).

Well this explains a lot - I have never noticed the “Reasons why post” so to me it was like you said about other platforms “No clue why certain models were selected”.

I will definitely keep an eye out to find that kind of post, thank you for letting me know about their existence

This is how I feel about the contest.

For a bit there the top images shown for the valentine contest were those floating sculpture things that had nothing to do with valentines at all. Because of the wash of spam and people shoving stuff up there just to advertise, everything gets a bit lost.

They had 1734 entries, and I was just thinking about the judges scrolling through all of that, haha.

Am I the only one around here who couldn’t care less about these competitions?

Also, contestants coming here to complain about their designs not winning is seriously cringe.

Well if you do not compete it would be weird if you cared about these competitions.
But if you actually put in hours of work and created a design liked by others just to lose to something random then you would not be happy.

This is so you could relate without being able to understand how much effort some designs ask - imagine that you entered an art contest in which contestants have to draw a face and you spend 40 hours to draw a very realistic looking face with a lot of details and you get beat by a circle with three dots and another circle inside it.

That’s exactly what is bothering me and many others who actually put in some thought and effort into the design.

And I am not complaining about my design not being between the “chosen” designs. I used my design in comparison to earring design as my design is better than it (this is questionable though as of course I have my own preference for my own design). However, I did not have to be listed among the “awards” but many other designs were definitely “robbed” they were more sophisticated designs that required more time to create, they were also way more loved by the community (likes/downloads and other metrics) and to top it all, they were way more in line with what the contest was about than flower earrings (just an example from the chosen designs).

Honestly neither mine NOR the flower earing design had any room to be chosen to be among the chosen designs.

So yeah cringe all you want, but some talented designers were “robbed”.

Printables isn’t much better at picking winners for their contests either. I’ve had some popular designs on here and on there where someone with a similar concept and less engagement has won so I can understand the frustration. I still enter contests though but mostly to challenge myself and improve my design skills. It’s a better long-term value proposition for me as a designer.

It’s not only about Prints, Downloads or Likes. I think they want originality, simple print and theme related, so imho these are the reasons those model didn’t get on top:

For in a row: Not so theme related just because you did some holes with heart shape in a classic game (nothing new)
Lockable Heart box: we saw tons of that in Christmas just without heart shape
Rose bear: old model
Heart slinky: Like the first one, not related just because it’s heart shaped
Box of rose: 1 kilos of filament…

My 2 cents

I know this is older, but I wish they would put an emphasis on unique and original creation. The winning models are great… but not really a great deal of original design was involved.
