Flat surface

Hi, I have designed a pair of socks in fusion 360 for my daughter in law whose Dad passed away and he was into burgandy socks, the sock are going to be on the Christmas tree each year. How can i produce a rough finish on a flat surface? Fuzzy setting is for walls and contours. Thanks

There are two methods that come to mind.

The first one is hard to do because it requires 3 technologies that aren’t generally used together. But it would produce any pattern you want. The method is to find or create a bitmap pattern of your liking and then convert it to an an STL file using a Heightmap generator. This technology is actually intended to take 3D topographic maps and use the color to translate into an STL for printing relief maps. I tried it and it works. The advantage is that it can produce any pattern you wish. You just have to find a bitmap of the pattern you like and experiment. Once you have an STL with the texture you like, you can do a Boolean merge in the slicer with the object you want print.

The easiest way and the fastest print time is to use the infill tool. Here are the steps.

  • Reduce the top layer to zero. This will expose the infill pattern below.
  • Chose an infill pattern of your liking and use a percent infill like 75%

When you slice it, you will get an idea as to what it will look like. I did this using gyroid at 75% but feel free to experiment.

Without walls.

Alternatively, You could try to just change the pattern of the top layer but the choices in patterns are cut in have and the one’s that look more organic are missing.

Here’s an example using lighting infill with zero top layer and 9 Bottom layers for solidification of the substrate. I use used a 0.20 layer height and made the infill width under quality tab set to 0.28

Bottom line is that you will have to experiment with density to vary the appeal.

In the pics below, Red filament is Bambu PLA Matte. Black is Overture PLA. The middle piece I forgot to change the filament profile so it was actually using the Overture PLA profile whereas the one on the left was using the Bambu PLA Matte. Please excuse the contaminant on the first one. I guess my printer nozzle didn’t purge well.
