Flow drop right after bottom layer

Hello guys, I tried printing this lampshade Lamp Shade 5.0 - Spiralvase - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld and had to scale it down for my needs. Turned off slow down at overhangs otherwise I kept the settings of the vase mode print file.

My problem and that of many others who printed in vase mode is the weak layer adhesion after the bottom layers.Starting the overhang after the object generic cylinder for the 42mm hole you can see the flow rate starts extremely low for almost the whole layer.

Recreating it by deleting the object the problem starts basically right after the bottom layers are ending and the first single layer in vase mode is starting.

Can someone explain to me what is happening here and is there workaround? I even imported in orca and had the same line of very low flow.

I was also searching for this problem for quite a while so if anybody can link me in the right direction of troubleshooting myself id be grateful.

I get a different result if I take the linked author’s 3mf and press slice. Notably, they dont have spiral vase mode enabled…

This is my 3mf file. Are you sure you selected the file with only 1wall from creator?

edit: as soon as I turn off slow down at overhangs the line starts to appear when the last cylinder object line is done.

Here’s what I see on the layer in question:

This is the first layer which the vase mode actually starts. The bottom as you can see is being made traditionally [seams do not exist for spiral, so any seam = normal mode] till it can start the spiral.

This being the first layer of spiral, what im seeing is that it actually starts at 0 flow and ramps up.

And I dont know if this can be called a bug in slicing or just a hard reality that for it to not put too much material for the next spiral, and working off a flat plane below it, it does actually have to flow 0.01 at the very beginning… I dunno. It seems like there should be a minimum that it starts at rather than flat 0 but idk.

exactly what I wondered. Id like to understand the physics behind that process.

Is it just starting at 0 flow because its starting a new sequence of the gcode with the vase mode starting? Can I apply a pause of the gcode til the flow had ramped up?

Found some other threads suggesting to use adaptive layer height but this may change the problem in real live but not in the preview. Is there a way to create specific flow for the start layer of the vase mode?

I think I may have a solution but I haven’t tried myself in a physical print, but the G-Code sim looks better.

For some reason the BL software seems to identify the top of the negative object as a starting point for the vase mode (as it see two objects instead of one). Instead of having two separate objects right click to the body drop down and select “mesh boolean” this then combines the two objects into one.

Now slice in vase mode with the settings you had before for overhangs etc., the vase mode now looks to start as soon as the top layer for the bottom of the vase finishes and a proper overlap occurs.

If you wanted to you should now also be able to increase the bottom layer thickness to add more strength if needed.

EDIT: You now don’t have the lip around the centre hole that was present before, I don’t know if this would effect the interface to the light fitting? If it’s important you can now just increase the number of bottom layers to match the lip height….

When I tried it it just deleted the negative object of the whole.

I guess it will still be a problematic area because of the low flow.

The preview should show a constant flow instead of ramping it up.

At this point Im just to curious about why it happens and how to solve this for future prints.

Did the bottom of the lamp shade look like the below after the mesh boolean? The negative object will be deleted as it effectively cuts that shape from the solid model.

I also checked the flow values of some other models from other users using spiral vase mode and all have the same initial low flow ramp up seen in yours, it looks like this is how this mode is supposed to work:

  1. Finish printing the base top layer.
  2. Start with low or zero flow at the same layer height as previous.
  3. As the hot end move around the wall it increase flow and slowly the Z height until it start the next actual layer.

See in the video below that the start of the low flow section is now actually inline with the last layer, with the way the cylinder was before this was happening further up the vase causing the model to fail.

Yeah exactly what I found after some extended research.So I finally got an answer to the physical part of it. Its also a well known problem that since vase mode is integrated in all the slicers theres a bug that you cant use a modifier with it. No slicer dev seems to want to fix this issue.

And you are right, using boolean does cut the hole. Havent seen it til I sliced a preview.

I stumbled over another thread where the OP found a workaround for using modifiers while vase printing. I wasnt been able to recreate it but I will give it a go again today.

Good to know. The special modes back in the day would just fail to slice if your model forced it to do something the special mode doesnt allow for, now they I guess, do this

GUYS!!! I finally found it. In Orcaslicer you can activate advanced settings and you can dial in the needed starting flow.

Ah nice! Glad you found a solution! I’m guessing this is something only available in Orca slicer though?

I was considering moving over but I’d have to unpair and re-pair my printer and at the time couldn’t be bothered. Maybe I should consider it if there are that many improvements….

Yeah as of right now only in orca. But you just have to login with your bambu account into orca, no need of unpair and re-pair.

Its sad that this critical feature is not implemented into bambu studio yet since its only a orca clone.So many profiles on makerworld could be a lot better with that little setting.

edit: login in into orca did log me out from bambu so nvm :sweat_smile:
