Frequent Z axis jams

I’ve put quite a few hours and many filament changes worth of printing on my X1, and I’ve noticed that more often than not after a multi-color print, there’s at least one purge blob sitting on top of the rear Z-Axis bracket on the build plate. If I forget to clean this off, it jams when starting the next print as it fails to home (and makes a horrendous noise!!)

Anyone have any ideas of how to prevent these blobs from getting flicked into the space around the rear Z screw? I’ve almost considered adding some layer gcode to basically build a wall at the back of the build plate that would block it, but it wouldn’t be able to be far enough back and might just make the problem worse.

Strangely, I rarely see other purge blobs sitting around inside the printer, maybe 1-2 per print, even with 300+ transitions, but if there’s one in the printer, it’s almost always on the Z bracket.

It has happened to me a couple times. Just turns into your normal preprint routine, check for poop inside.

I just had this happen on the 6th print with my new X1. Z axis jammed from a purge blob on a single-color print while homing the Z axis after purging the nozzle at the start of the print. In any case, I seems to have jammed between the top of the rear Z-axis bracket and the black metal internal cover (just above the slot in the back for the z-axis bracket. The top (horizontal) portion sits very close above the top of the bracket at the Z home position.

Since this cover obviously doesn’t prevent blobs from getting on top of the bracket, it seems that this issue could be prevented by simply cutting away that portion of the cover. Could be done pretty quickly with a hand file (if you know how to use a file, you could probably do the filing in less time than it takes to remove and replace the cover.) But I haven’t looked at it closely enoug to tell if that would cause any other problems. Has anyone else tried this yet?

Oh, on closer inspection, the cover is plastic. Tempted to just take a pair of flush cutters to it.
