Just to share this with everyone that uses LAN only mode. I expected the printer not to check for firmware updates.
However, Bambu Studio on the device/update page for the printer shows the current version of the firmware and has an update button. I expected Bambu Studio to notify me when there was an available firmware update. I have missed the last two updates because of this. The update button is disabled and the version shown is old.
That’s bad news. Why is there no way to download the update, put it on an sd-card and update the printer ? Many other equipment can be updated that way.
My A1 wil never be connected to the internet directly so it will forever run on the original firmware (01.00.00.09) ? I’m disappointed.
By the way, solutions like “hook it up, download/install, disconnect” won’t do it …
Why though? There’s an SD card. It’s an ESP32. Reading a firmware update from the card is not difficult.
Quite frankly OTA updates for ESP32 devices have also existed for years. There are a myriad of examples to pull from - ESPHome would be a great resource here if the development team needs a hand getting started on it. I’d link to the official docs on how to do it but apparently links aren’t allowed.
That does not appear to be a trade-off that’s necessary
You are absolutely correct, there is no valid reason for this. I have been going in circles with Bambu support team asking the same questions. All I can figure is this is the price of doing business with a Chinese company. “capitalism” in a communist country has its price. I’m guessing the huge resource of intellectual property is the price. look at every smart device that comes from there and there is always the requirement of entering your wifi access information with gps location enabled as a requirement. Why? I use esphome with home assist and I know none of this is required. The device can be booting in stand alone acting as wifi access point you connect to and configure wifi info locally. There are numerous solutions that have been available for years to do this. I have told Bambu support the same. I purchased the PS1 excited to use all the cool features and realized I bought another Philips smart bulb. At least the smart bulbs could be hacked for my own purpose. With this printer I’m stuck carrying an sdcard back and forth like I just bought the first creality ender. At least other printer can be used with octoprint. Even my old prusa mini offered and addon port for esp8266 which allowed me to connect to wifi and print local only. This is an utter disappointment. Yah I’m pissed off. Bambu support just played dumb the first few replies, now they don’t reply at all. All I can hope is the word gets out in this, and everyone stops buying them until they resolve this huge security hole which they know exist. One big example is the August 15th incident where Bambu printers suddenly started printing garbage during the night or interrupted current prints and destroyed them . gotta love cloud based apps.
