Getting Parts to mate properly

Hi All,

Im printing a template that is to large for the bed so would like to print it in 2 halfs and the 2 lock together with some kind of joint such as a dovetail joint.

But when i print them they dont fit together.

I have my xy hole and contour adjustments dialled in but dont think changing the contour would help as would make both parts smaller or larger and the problem would be the same.

Are there any other settings to tweak that could help this or do i need to just physically model the 2 parts so one is fractionally smaller that the other with trial and error?

Thanks

Dan

What do you use for a clearance? I use a gap of 0.25mm for just about everything, and it always turns out fairly well. If you aren’t accounting for clearance the trouble makes sense. Remember if something is exactly on the mark, they will actually occupy the same space and cause interference.

This is best changed in the design phase. Most CAD tools will allow you to offset the clearance. You can sometimes get away with scaling, but that isn’t always effective, but in a pinch you can try.

Also note, 0.25mm is a good clearance number for most things, but if you need a tight fit, try a smaller number like 0.125mm.

Hole and contour compensations only make you struggle more when trying to print parts to fit…
Only real option is a proper filament calibration and designing the parts with the required clearances applied to the model.

ok i will give this a try.
Thanks
