Glue or not glue?

I’m a 3D printing enthusiast who always uses glue, regardless of the filament or build plate. My go-to is Magigoo Original for most materials, but for PAHT-CF, I switch to Magigoo PA. So far, I haven’t had any prints warp or lose grip on the plate.

However, I did have an interesting experience with PLA Silk dual-color filament. A small section without glue literally fused to my textured PEI plate, while the areas with glue released perfectly when the plate cooled to room temperature.

How about you? Do you only use glue for specific filaments and plates that need it, or do you always apply glue like I do?

I have never used glue for any purpose.

I have been told I am in the minority, I am not sure that is true.

The reason the area without glue fused to the bed is your circumstances that required the glue meant that the glue isn’t just designed to stick it to the bed, it acts as a release agent once the print ends.

I think there are as many answers to the glue/no glue debate as there are 3D printer enthusiasts!

I’ve printed PLA Silk dual color on textured PEI before without glue, and it didn’t fuse. The only difference this time was that I skipped washing the plate; instead, I just wiped it with IPA and reapplied glue.

It’s always interesting to hear how others approach this, as it can help optimize our own printing methods.

I tend to go off of manufacturer recommendations for build plate and/or filament. Using your example of Bambu’s Dual Silk PLA, they recommend using glue, so I’d probably throw down some just in case even though it’s PLA.

Build plate? I’m still on the original “cool” and “engineering” plates that came with my X1C. closing in on 4000 hours of print time. I never use glue sticks. I hardly ever even wipe the plates down with IPA. I can’t remember the last time I had a print come unstuck during the first layer. I can’t remember the last time I had a print that refused to come off. But I use a 2" wide wood chisel (flat back of the chisel flat on the build plate, slide it forward, the edge gets under the print easily, and there’s no risk to the build plate surface) to encourage stubborn prints to come loose, I don’t fight with them if they don’t pop off on the first bend of the plate.
