Gort has landed (aka my latest model)

Gort has landed…

He’s all done! Print file, programming, and model page all built. Will post him tomorrow since that seems to be the best day to post new models for best exposure.

He can be animatronic or static display. Up to the builder. He uses the Adafruit Prop-Maker Feather as his brain and that provides neopixel output for an RGB eye, audio output to replay sounds and dialog, and a servo output used to open and close Gort’s visor.

The down side to animatronic is I cannot supply the movie sound files I ripped for my version due to copyright but they are easy enough for anyone to rip themselves.

Here’s what he looks like…

This is incredible! I’m very curious what kind of curved LED array you’re using there, and how the diffuser in front of it creates that awesome diffraction pattern.

Thanks! The LED neopixel strip is this one. It’s very flexible along the way I curved it. It’s the highest density of neopixel strip Adafruit sells and looks amazing.

About that lens - it surprised me too that it is actually working like a lens. Not a great lens, but it works well enough and adds tremendously to the eye animation.

Here is a shot as I was testing it out and was just using a lighting pattern on the LEDs from another project. The different colors show the lens action because at the edges of the color bars the colors swap back and forth interleaved a little. Pretty crazy. It’s Hatchbox transparent black PLA which at this thickness still transmits light well. I printed it using the Bambu silk PLA profile and it worked out really well.

That looks super awesome! Klaatu Barada Necktie. Double movie reference there.

OOOH yeah, that looks incredible! I’m really surprised you’re able to get such great vertical diffusion from a single row of LED’s - that’s really impressive. I’m guessing the Silicone diffuser on top of the LED’s helps along with the distance away from the printed ‘lens’?

Trying out different translucent “lenses” on top of an LED strip like this has been on my to-do list for a while, but I just haven’t had time to explore it. I’m really happy to see how well this worked out!

For anyone wondering what Bambu considers a boost-worthy model THIS, THIS RIGHT HERE! You didn’t just drop the mic, you took it and threw it in to space!

This is amazing!

I think part of that may be layer lines acting like a horizontal lens too. I think I just got lucky. It worked out better than I hoped.

I don’t know it’s like that but thanks! Hopefully it will be deemed complex and get boosters something more, though. And hopefully people enjoy him.

I looked around for other Gort projects and there’s not a lot out there. There are some though. :alien::alien::alien:

I feel like if you sent the pictures and model link to Adafruit they would feature this on their site too.

That’s a good idea! As soon as I have a link, will do! Thanks, T!

I see a small z line - reprint bro

What a beautiful build seriously. :100:

I was curious about your transparent but you answered that above. I didn’t know they made black, I only found “clear” I’ll need to look up the smokey stuff it looks fantastic! (ceiling lamp shade in my head with it omg!)

I also think you should post over on the ada forums, they will gobble this up as everyone is looking for projects!

(( Just picked up a new pico w 2 dev kit and I can’t wait to do some projects like yours here phew! ))

Thanks! There is a subtlety with that lens. My first one was clear filament and blotchy. Walls and thickness can have the slicer decide some spaces are too thin for filament and leave internal spaces that ruin the effect. If you end up with blotchy, going thicker may help.

I got the Hatchbox transparent black PLA on Amazon (ASIN B00M0CS1FC) and there’s a whole collection of transparent PLA there.

And I will let them know. They have tons of projects that are so cool too.

The animatronic bug is fun. I have, uh, ideas. :joy: Working out the animations and working up the routine is kind of a fun puzzle too. Only problem is I figured out some stuff where now I feel I should rewrite the Clausometer code. More work.

Gort back at ya. Resin cast, not a print, though.

Nice! How tall is he? ……

I’ve enjoyed the updates and following you as you did this.
It came out fantastic and you should be proud of it.
Very nice.

Thanks Jay! He’s always been a fascination of mine. I’m really surprised there aren’t more versions out there. And it was getting the X1C that enabled this. Thanks!

About 16" tall. It’s actually a limited-edition licensed model, in spite of it being a little bit out-of-proportion. Bought it many years ago. I’m a huge Sci Fi fan and have been pretty much since I learned to read.

Glad you like it! It was a gamble but looks great with the LEDs lit up behind it.
