Gridfinity size varies

Hey everyone,

no idea if anyone has already noticed but there’re 2 different Gridfinity sizes out there: 35.7 x 35.7mm and 37.7 x 37.7mm

I had done my own Gridfinity grid based on 35.7mm x 35.7mm and just noticed that most available boxes and add-ons are 37.5 which defies the entire purpose of being standardized.

Did someone mess up and people remixed, remixing remixes and it spread like a desease, or what happened here? Anyone any idea?

I checked the specification

The base of a bin is spposed to be 35.6 according to specification.

The slot in the baseplate is I believe undefined. (Edit Actually it isn’t, it’s defined by the profile measurements).

Use the larger size and the smaller ones will fit.

Yeah, that’s what I thought too, but most bins are 37.2 - therefore they wouldn’t fit.

Here are just 3 random picks off Makerworld:

Take another look at the spec: The 35.6 is until the bottom chamfer starts. That is 45° and therefore as wide as it’s high (0.8mm, on all edges). That gives 35.6 + 0.8 + 0.8 = 37.2 for the faces measured in your screenshot.

I would just use one of the GF generators to make a solid bin and then cut it out yourself to fit whatever. No need to redraw the whole bin.
