H2D Air Filtration Upgrade

Super interested in whether the carbon is actually acid free. You should put one in a box with a fan blowing through it and onto some freshly cleaned metal parts to see if they rust.

I dont doubt the carbon is acid free, Im more concerned with how much is in there, the type and the H13 filter quality. Wont know until i cut it open.

I would honestly feel more confident in designing a new filter that allows us to add an Amazon big brand h13 and add our regular nevermore-like carbon. I honestly dont trust Hepas from Ali very much and would be very afraid of acidic carbon
Since its easy to design a new filter that allows for these, I think its not worth the risk. Bey hey – i commend you for your bravery

@maximit I’d actually do the screw test at least for 24h… Just in case…

Sure ill throw in some screws in a bag with the filter for a few days, i am still on the OEM filter.

Yeah I stuck all the extras on I would like to see in it so I could get an idea of costs - anything other than external extraction with the intake filter makes little sense.

Wasn’t getting mad, 0 3D printing experience or knowledge, hence building the AQMs to get some actual data for my environment and building multiple AQMs to rule out data errors. Just establishing that I wasn’t a complete novice when it comes to airflow or filtering

Didn’t run the printer, extractor or Ikea fan overnight/yesterday afternoon.

Can see where it’s been switched off just looking at the PM count so I’d take this as some proof that the Ikea air filter setup is doing a good job at keeping PM levels down. PM levels are also around baseline figures for the house looking at my Dyson fan data (which is also in a different part of the house).
Note that the values are maximum figures over the monitoring period.
T
he VOC trace shows some big spikes - that’s my wife’s body spray, in another room. VOC 1 sensor has died and is showing full scale high values, hence its toggled off.

Yeah I dont turn mine off, it runs 24/7 on the highest speed. I noticed a lot less dust in the printer room so its doing its job with PM particles.

Well, sadly the laserpecker also pulls too much air on the lowest setting. Not as much as the xtool, but a bit more than I’d like. I like to keep my chamber warmer for PETG, which is what I print with 90% of the time, to help mitigate warping.

Oh well, I’ll have to find another use for this thing now lol.

Mine finally arrived – Very happy with it. Airflow is very good. Love the automated fan speed based on the PM sensor, and on high speed the airflow is really strong. In low-speed mode its also very silent.

However, getting replacement filters might prove a headpache…
I don’t think the one you shared there is the right match (looks different than mine). I still haven’t been able to find a match but my OEM filter looks very much like this one Amazon.com. Cannot confirm if its the same though since the Amazon listing doesnt share the sizes. FYI the OEM mesures: 230x158x29 mm

Found the sizes of the Amazon one I shared, the answer is no: not the same…
Still no luck finding a replacement. Lmk if you find one!

What if you made something like this for your setup. Or even better something with an adjustable opening that you could fine tune.

That’s a very nice idea, should def solve his problem

That’s a good idea! I might have to scale it down to fit the adapter I have on the back of my printer. I believe it’s a 3.5ā€ outlet

I’ve been working on this as a very cheap, very adjustable air flow, and modular filter box setup.

The top and inlet/outlet sides are held together with magnets for the modularity of future accessories or attachments. The interior holds these Amazon.com can put up to 4 of them in there to achieve desired filtering and/or air flow along with the fan that has a dial speed controller.

This is obviously a prototype lol. There’s definitely some adjustments I need to make yet and some aesthetic cleanup. Once it’s all said and done though it’ll be a nice little adjustable fume/particulate filter.

When I upload it, I’ll allow remix’s so anyone can make it what they need or make attachments for it.

I’m kind of second guessing using the nevermoore scorch inside the printer. I’ve been doing some reading on what potassium Permanganate does to various VOC’s.

The one in particular I’m interested in is acetaldehyde because most of my printing is with PETG and pet filaments. From what I’ve read, potassium permanganate doesn’t absorb acetaldehyde, it oxidizes it and turns it into acetic acid. Which is corrosive to metals. Idk, maybe I’m severely overestimating the volumes and concentrations. Most likely.

I think for now I’ll use it in an exterior carbon filter, right before the external hepa filter. I’d rather ruin a cheap levoit core mini than the back side of the H2D lol.

Running a manrose wall mount extractor fan at 100mm - hasn’t impacted PLA print quality and is routed outside via some rectangle profile ducting.
showerinlinefanrange.pdf

On the Scorch front this was predominantly developed for resin 3D printers - they have similar setups in terms of leadscrews to drive the Z axis, run at higher chamber temps and using resin which is nasty stuff in un-cured form and comes in a range of plastic types.

Your reading does indicate just how little is known about the VOC side of FDM printing and the huge range of gasses that can be emitted - agree that the underlying issue is concentration levels.

Also don’t know how some chemicals/elements change when mixed with another and the impact of that change - the lab testing into FDM emissions I have read are not consistent either making it much harder!

I’m using Nevermore Boost for the AUX fan mod by KYZ. So far so good!

I do trust this brand because they’re quite popular in the Voron space and it does seem like they know what they’re doing. It’s also being produced in Spain, so it hopefully should be more trustworthy than buying a bad from some Chinese vendor? (I hope )

Even though the filter looks slightly different than this photo, dimensions match

Oh 100%, nevermore has been vetted extensively. No problems trusting their products. The boost wasn’t available at the time I made my purchase, so I had just planned on mixing the scorch 50/50 with my current stock of coconut shell activated carbon.
