I noticed there’s a hardened steel extruder gear assembly available in the shop:
Is this item is an upgrade to the built-in extuder or is the built-in extruder gear assembly made out of hardened steel already?

It’s not an upgrade, the A1 comes with an hardened steel extruder gear.

i found this out AFTER i bought one, figured they didnt do it on the p1p so i assumed i had to upgrade it on A1 also lol
But are they really the same? Extruder gear has to be hardened and each one is hardened to some extent, even for normal plain PLA printers. If you used there normal hardness metal, then it would worn out earlier than expected
Good to know that I’m not the only one that made that false assumption 
Why would they all be hardened? The factory-installed extruder gears on the P1 series are just plain stainless steel. And yes, it degrades quicker than the hardened ones. The one installed on the A1 is exactly the one you can buy in the online shop as a spare part.
