Maker’s Supply Kits and Parts: Magnetic Levitation DIY Kit
Q: What is the sensitivity of the power switch for the LED light? A: In my model, I had included the power button in a recessed area and was concerned whether or not it would still be functional - it appears as though the switch can be triggered if a finger is placed within about 5mm - direct contact is not needed.
Q: How high does the model float? A: About 10mm in my case with the weights noted below. To maximize the effect, I tried to design the enclosure to be as thin as possible.
Q: How does weight impact the height of the float? A: In my testing, 90g is the most weight I’ve attempted and this floated without issue. From what I can tell, the height of the float isn’t significantly impacted by weight changes.
Q: What is the makeup of the float component? A: Within the protective shell, there are 3 pieces, the magnet, the inductive coil/light board and a printed spacer between the two.
Even though I removed these components from the shell, I found it helpful to save the spacer for use in my enclosure.
Because the inductive coil for the light is a separate piece, there is some flexibility on placement if you choose to not place it directly under the magnet
Q: How well will the float balance? A: My model was particularly top-heavy and I did have some balance issues. I even noticed some differences based on the filament used or just with other small adjustments in the print.
To reduce waste during testing & to adjust after the print was completed, I used putty to add some weight to points in the model to get it balanced - here’s the kind I used.
If unbalanced, the model can rotate more than desired - this also generates a faint buzzing sound when out of balance.
