Help with printing difficult model

I am having trouble printing a this model: https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/art/snoopy-king-art-toy-stl on my P1S with AMS.

Head, body and crown are all separate parts.

Especially the head seems to be a nightmare for FDM printers. I tried about 15 different orientations, supports (tree, normal, 0.25 Top Z distance), etc. But I can’t seem to get a satisfying result. Supports on the ears leave behind unclean places (even with PETG as interface layer - the print itself is in PLA Basic), depending on the orientation there are unclean places on the face itself. I also tried to cut the head into 2 pieces to get 2 planes print. This went a little better but obviously you still see the cut when glueing them together.

Does anyone have an advice for me? Because I am at my wits end right now :frowning_face:

Myself, I would print the head nose up. This would need supports at the back of the head & the neck mount, but it looks like the best option.
With the back of the head being rounded I would use normal support, snug, buildplate only…JMO

I have been 3d printing for quite a while, and about 5 years ago I had a BNC Sigma I got used from a company that was throwing it out. I loved that machine because I could use PVA supports and completely encapsulate the entire model in support material and then dissolve them away.

I have had a P1P for about two years now - but not an AMS.

Can you use PVA supports with the AMS? A lot of PVA materials are maybe too flexible, but there are PLA-like blends (Ultimaker makes a really nice one but it is 2.85mm diameter).

You will need the AMS to print with any material including the PVA if you wish to have support different from the main material.

This makes sense as the back of the model is least likely to be seen.

Tree supports will give the least amount of contact points.

Yes I know you will need the AMS to print multi-materials. I was just asking why the OP does not use PVA. 100% contact supports with PVA turn out almost perfect, and if they are printing models like this a lot, worth the cost.

£62 per 1kg is expensive.

Provided the PVA is configured to be ONLY used as the support interface and not all the supports, very little will be used.

Isn’t the issue when printing the full support with PVA, that the printer would need to switch material on every layer? This could turn out pretty expensive, specially if I want to scale the model :slight_smile:

PVA from third party brands is actually not that expensive here in germany.

I tried with normal support, snug, buildplate only in “extra fine 0.08” preset with the 0.4 nozzle. Did 3 raft layers and a top z distance of 0.25. Supports separated quite decently.

Turned out decent … and yeah, obviously you are not going to see the back.
